✨ Meet Josh - Senior Communications Officer at Settle We're hiring a Senior External Engagement Manager If you’d like to join a supportive, fun, and enthusiastic team, and work alongside colleagues like Josh (me, I am writing this), apply now. www.prospect-us.co.uk/job/195684-s...

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: Hi Josh, What’s your role at Settle?

Hey, I am the Senior Comms Officer at Settle. I work on our digital communications, things like our social media and newsletters, our designed materials and larger projects like our collaboration with Comic Relief last December.

By far the best part of my job is working with all of the wonderful people that make up our community and the incredible Settle Advocates. This could involve external opportunities, creative content for social media or working on the Home of Our Own campaign, helping amplify the voices of care-experienced young people calling for change.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

Before moving to Settle I have worked in loads of different jobs. I spent a long time trying to work out what it actually was I wanted to do!

I was a chef for a long time, working my way up from a KP to chef de partie, which sounds fancier than it is. I worked in a primary school after that, and this is when I decided that I wanted to do a job where I could support young people to have the futures they deserve. After this I was lucky enough to be a part of the Rank Foundation’s Time 2 Shine programme, which completely changed my life and gave me the opportunity to work in the charity sector.

Finally, after spending some time in North Africa teaching skateboarding and graphic design at children’s homes and community spaces, I ended up at Settle.
Image text: Why did you join Settle?

Noone should feel alone and like they do not have the financial, practical or emotional support to build the life they want for themselves. Noone should have to experience homelessness.

This is something that has always felt particularly important to me, and a big part of why I wanted to work at Settle. I really believe that everyone should have the opportunity to feel safe, secure and supported and be able to build the future they deserve. It shouldn’t matter who you are.

I wanted the opportunity to help make care-experienced young people’s voices heard. We need change to ensure that no young person leaving care experiences homelessness, and I believe strongly that this conversation should be led by those young people.

Reflecting on the difference the grant had made for her she told us "I'm so excited, even my mood has changed as well." In 2025–26, our wellbeing grants have helped young people access hobbies, celebrate special occasions and treat themselves to something that they wouldn't usually.

We love hearing how wellbeing grants have been used across the Settle community and the positive impact they've had. One young person, who dreamed of transforming her garden but didn't have access to the tools to get started, headed straight outside mid-session to begin pulling up weeds!

For young people leaving care finances can be a major barrier to accessing the support they need, taking care of their wellbeing or just doing the things they enjoy. Our wellbeing grants allow young people to treat themselves to items or experiences they might other wise avoid spending on.

A photo of Josephine stood smiling to camera in front of bush filled with white blossoms.Image text: Hi Josephine, What’s your role at Settle?

I’m a Partnerships Engagement Officer, working closely with our existing partners to ensure partnerships run smoothly, maximise referral numbers, and provide support when challenges arise. I also focus on developing new partnerships with local authorities across London to make Settle’s support as accessible as possible for care-experienced young people, helping to improve their long-term outcomes.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

I previously worked for Centrepoint as a Support and Progression Officer, alongside another charity focused on youth violence prevention, where I worked as a Project Assistant, while also studying for my MSc in Global Health, Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine. Both roles involved supporting young people in different capacities one frontline and one more operational and programme-focused. This gave me experience both in directly supporting young people and in helping to design and deliver programmes aimed at promoting their wellbeing and holistic development.Image text: Why did you join Settle?

I joined Settle firstly because of its mission to prevent homelessness among care-experienced young people. This really resonated with me because of the work I previously did at Centrepoint, where I saw first-hand how vulnerable homelessness can make young people feel, and the long-term impact it can have on every area of their lives. I also saw how easily it can leave young people more susceptible to other adverse experiences.

What really drew me to Settle is that the organisation doesn’t just focus on housing, but on the wider picture too mental health, wellbeing, finances, confidence, and community. I truly believe the Settle model is a meaningful and preventative solution to homelessness, helping young people build stable and fulfilling futures.

More than anything, Settle feels like more than just a programme; it feels like a genuine community, and that sense of purpose and care is what attracted me to the organisation.

Yesterday, the government released data showing 106 reported deaths of care experienced children and young people In England over the past year. Most were between 16 and 21. We feel grief for these young people, and we also feel angry about their deaths.

Settle exists because too many young people are left without the help they need during the transition out of the children’s care system. Care-experienced young people deserve to leave care with more support around them, not less.

We welcome the government's new review into care leaver deaths, led by Ashley John-Baptiste and Clare Chamberlain. Once they publish their report this summer, we will be watching closely to make sure the government acts on their recommendations and puts the right support in place to prevent future deaths. Because leaving care should never feel like no one cares.

We know that this article will be distressing for care-experienced young people to read.

If you’re on the Settle Programme now or have been in the past, you can reach out to your Settle Coach or attend one of our drop-ins for additional support.

If you are in crisis and need immediate help, you can contact Samaritans on freephone 116 123. You can also text SHOUT to 85258, a confidential 24/7 text support service.

✨ Meet Paul - Senior Community and Participation Officer at Settle. Paul leads on many of the community spaces and opportunities that bring Settle graduates together, creating spaces for connection, confidence-building, up-skilling and advocacy. #MeetTheTeam #Advocacy #Community
A picture of Paul smiling towards the camera

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: Hi Paul, What’s your role at Settle?

I am the Senior Community and Participation Officer, which hopefully means I'm in charge of a lot of the more fun, sociable and interactive community aspects of what we offer at Settle. The Settle Community acts as a space for graduates of the Settle programme to be connected with one another, up-skilling and building confidence, as well as a space for advocacy work; lifting up and championing care-experienced voices to influence meaningful change.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

My previous background has largely been creative arts; graphic design, photography and art & design facilitation. In early 2019 I got involved with Extinction Rebellion as a local group coordinator and art & design facilitation. I've also been involved with The Care Experienced Movement and in the past 5 years have built up a personal network of adult care-experienced individuals who I've found to be so enriching and generative. I also once had a job as Billy the Badger for Fulham F.C.Image text: Why did you join Settle?

I joined Settle because I wanted to combine my lived-experience, with my activism and community organising work to better support and pay-it-backwards to younger generations of care-experienced people, which is hopefully what I'm able to bring to this role. Care (or a lack of care) has come to define so much of our social, economic and political lives and I'm a big believer in community organising being one of the ways we can counter so much of the ills of society.

Period poverty affects far too many young people, and its impact goes far beyond access to products. It can affect someone’s health, confidence, education and sense of dignity. Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable period care, regardless of their circumstances.
