✨ Meet Josh - Senior Communications Officer at Settle We're hiring a Senior External Engagement Manager If you’d like to join a supportive, fun, and enthusiastic team, and work alongside colleagues like Josh (me, I am writing this), apply now. www.prospect-us.co.uk/job/195684-s...

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: Hi Josh, What’s your role at Settle?

Hey, I am the Senior Comms Officer at Settle. I work on our digital communications, things like our social media and newsletters, our designed materials and larger projects like our collaboration with Comic Relief last December.

By far the best part of my job is working with all of the wonderful people that make up our community and the incredible Settle Advocates. This could involve external opportunities, creative content for social media or working on the Home of Our Own campaign, helping amplify the voices of care-experienced young people calling for change.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

Before moving to Settle I have worked in loads of different jobs. I spent a long time trying to work out what it actually was I wanted to do!

I was a chef for a long time, working my way up from a KP to chef de partie, which sounds fancier than it is. I worked in a primary school after that, and this is when I decided that I wanted to do a job where I could support young people to have the futures they deserve. After this I was lucky enough to be a part of the Rank Foundation’s Time 2 Shine programme, which completely changed my life and gave me the opportunity to work in the charity sector.

Finally, after spending some time in North Africa teaching skateboarding and graphic design at children’s homes and community spaces, I ended up at Settle.
Image text: Why did you join Settle?

Noone should feel alone and like they do not have the financial, practical or emotional support to build the life they want for themselves. Noone should have to experience homelessness.

This is something that has always felt particularly important to me, and a big part of why I wanted to work at Settle. I really believe that everyone should have the opportunity to feel safe, secure and supported and be able to build the future they deserve. It shouldn’t matter who you are.

I wanted the opportunity to help make care-experienced young people’s voices heard. We need change to ensure that no young person leaving care experiences homelessness, and I believe strongly that this conversation should be led by those young people.

Image text: Content Warning: This post and coverage of the incident discussed mention violence and the death of a young person.

On Tuesday there was an incident at Brent Civic Centre that resulted in the tragic death of a young person aged 17.

First and foremost, Settle sends our deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of the young person. We also know this tragedy will feel close to home to young people we support in Brent, and to our partners at the council who are based at Brent Civic Centre. Our thoughts are with all of them.

We continue to support young people in Brent as usual, and we are working with the council to make sure we do this safely.

Incidents like this can affect people in different ways. Whether you’re on the Settle Programme now or have been in the past, you can always get in touch with us if you need additional support - either through your coach or through our graduate drop-ins.

For young people leaving care finances can be a major barrier to accessing the support they need, taking care of their wellbeing or just doing the things they enjoy. Our wellbeing grants allow young people to treat themselves to items or experiences they might other wise avoid spending on.

👋 Meet Josephine - Settle's Partnerships Engagement Officer If you are committed to seeing young people thrive and achieve their full potential, we are currently hiring a Senior Settle Coach and would love to hear from you. Apply now: wearesettle.org/careers/?utm...
A photo of Josephine stood smiling to camera in front of bush filled with white blossoms.Image text: Hi Josephine, What’s your role at Settle?

I’m a Partnerships Engagement Officer, working closely with our existing partners to ensure partnerships run smoothly, maximise referral numbers, and provide support when challenges arise. I also focus on developing new partnerships with local authorities across London to make Settle’s support as accessible as possible for care-experienced young people, helping to improve their long-term outcomes.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

I previously worked for Centrepoint as a Support and Progression Officer, alongside another charity focused on youth violence prevention, where I worked as a Project Assistant, while also studying for my MSc in Global Health, Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine. Both roles involved supporting young people in different capacities one frontline and one more operational and programme-focused. This gave me experience both in directly supporting young people and in helping to design and deliver programmes aimed at promoting their wellbeing and holistic development.Image text: Why did you join Settle?

I joined Settle firstly because of its mission to prevent homelessness among care-experienced young people. This really resonated with me because of the work I previously did at Centrepoint, where I saw first-hand how vulnerable homelessness can make young people feel, and the long-term impact it can have on every area of their lives. I also saw how easily it can leave young people more susceptible to other adverse experiences.

What really drew me to Settle is that the organisation doesn’t just focus on housing, but on the wider picture too mental health, wellbeing, finances, confidence, and community. I truly believe the Settle model is a meaningful and preventative solution to homelessness, helping young people build stable and fulfilling futures.

More than anything, Settle feels like more than just a programme; it feels like a genuine community, and that sense of purpose and care is what attracted me to the organisation.

✨ Meet Paul - Senior Community and Participation Officer at Settle. Paul leads on many of the community spaces and opportunities that bring Settle graduates together, creating spaces for connection, confidence-building, up-skilling and advocacy. #MeetTheTeam #Advocacy #Community
A picture of Paul smiling towards the camera

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: Hi Paul, What’s your role at Settle?

I am the Senior Community and Participation Officer, which hopefully means I'm in charge of a lot of the more fun, sociable and interactive community aspects of what we offer at Settle. The Settle Community acts as a space for graduates of the Settle programme to be connected with one another, up-skilling and building confidence, as well as a space for advocacy work; lifting up and championing care-experienced voices to influence meaningful change.Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

My previous background has largely been creative arts; graphic design, photography and art & design facilitation. In early 2019 I got involved with Extinction Rebellion as a local group coordinator and art & design facilitation. I've also been involved with The Care Experienced Movement and in the past 5 years have built up a personal network of adult care-experienced individuals who I've found to be so enriching and generative. I also once had a job as Billy the Badger for Fulham F.C.Image text: Why did you join Settle?

I joined Settle because I wanted to combine my lived-experience, with my activism and community organising work to better support and pay-it-backwards to younger generations of care-experienced people, which is hopefully what I'm able to bring to this role. Care (or a lack of care) has come to define so much of our social, economic and political lives and I'm a big believer in community organising being one of the ways we can counter so much of the ills of society.

Period poverty affects far too many young people, and its impact goes far beyond access to products. It can affect someone’s health, confidence, education and sense of dignity. Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable period care, regardless of their circumstances.

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: I'm a Senior Trusts and Foundations Officer at Settle, which means I help raise the money that we need to support young people. As we are a charity, we're always fundraising to keep our work going, so I spend most of my time writing about Settle, telling people about the need for our work and how we can make a difference.

Before starting this role in April, I was a Senior Settle Coach for over 3 years! I absolutely loved it. I got to know so many amazing young people and it was such a privilege to see each person achieve things they never thought they could. This new role is great, because it gives me the opportunity to help more young people experience Settle's life changing support. Image Text: I worked at a charity that supported charity CEOs who had lived experience of the problem they were trying to solve. Our aim was to make sure that they were given personalised support to give them the best chance at making a difference, so I worked closely with each person to understand what they needed, like support with their finances or wellbeing - kind of like a Settle Coach! Image text: I had always wanted to work in a frontline role. I love meeting lots of different people and making sure people feel seen and heard is incredibly important to me - especially if they've been disempowered. I wanted to work somewhere that helped people to believe in themselves and see that other people believe in them.

I started to learn more about the care system in my previous job, where I worked with someone who was building trauma-informed children's homes in the UK. The more I learned about what young people's experience can be like in the care system, the more I wanted to play a part in helping those young people experience meaningful care and support.

Abi is one of our Settle Coaches, meeting young people every week. Meeting with young people and working together to find the support they need, Abi's work ensures that care-experienced young people have everything they need to sustain their tenancy and have the best start at independence.
Image: An photo of Abi standing infront of a vibrant green back drop, she is smilling warmly.

Image text: Meet the teamImage text: Hi Abi, What’s your role at Settle?

I am a Settle coach. I work frontline, meeting young people on a weekly basis for sessions. I support young people with their transition into independent living by holding sessions where we can discuss what they need support with. Some sessions may focus on setting up rent and utility accounts, while other sessions may focus on finding and applying for external grants for young people.
Image text: Why did you join Settle?

I joined Settle because I wanted to support young people with similar lived experience as me. As a care leaver myself, I would have benefitted from a charity like Settle when I was younger and not so clued up. I am happy to be that person who provides support for other care leavers. Image text: What are you up to when you’re not working?

When I am not working, I spend my time watching football, cooking and reading detective mysteries. My favourite book is Agatha Christie's 'The Mysterious Affair at Style'. I think there is something special about me never being able to guess the suspect correctly.

Image text: Before Settle I worked in major donor fundraising and partnership management for many years, most recently for an international non-governmental organisation supporting children without parental care. There I oversaw a large project aimed at helping young people into decent employment and got to know the disproportionate challenges that care-experienced young people face as they reach adulthood. I worked with a number of teams in very different countries and saw a range of approaches to supporting young people. For me, the Settle model represents the very best of those approaches, so my next career step felt like a natural evolution.Image text: When I first learned about Settle I just knew I had to work there! I love that Settle recognises that young people leaving care need completely individualised support. Settle sets young people up with the skills and confidence to be their best selves by giving them time, care and encouragement – things we all need to thrive.

Since joining Settle I have got to witness the genuine care that our team has for the young people we support. I want that to be available for everyone setting up their own lives and being able to work towards that is one of the reasons why I love my job.Image text: As the mum of two fantastic young people, I spend much of my time hanging out with them. Recently my son has developed a keen interest in baking so I have loved teaching him what I know, and enjoying his excellent biscuits! My daughter is a big animal lover so we have been having fun with some puppy sitting. I try to make time to read and enjoy a novel with great characters. We moved house last year and I am enjoying pottering in my garden and making it a home.
