It's truly one of, if not the worst decisions this committee has made. It makes no sense and is the antithesis of good sport. 031

Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 10/08/2026This is an insane USAG rule. This was not even a valid vault under the CoP, it does not warrant a score. I hope they reconsider this... 000
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026I have no idea how (if) this can be stopped. Maybe with a complete reset with a new leadership (the current one needs to go for all the damage they have done) and a strong enforcement of the rules, even if it hurts? But the Russia/Europe issue will remain - and it is so much bigger than gymnastics. 020
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026If this catches on, it will be slowly (or quickly) corosive for the FIG and gymnastics in general, to the extent that it might be the existential threat for the FIG I mentioned at the beginning. 100
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026This could be very bad for gymnastics and the FIG. I don't want Russia to compete in gymnastics again, but I fully accept this is a terrible precendent. Because who is next? China refusing visa to Taiwanese gymnasts? Armenia to Azerbijani? There are so many options. 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026But if the FIG do not sanction Europe for it, they cannot sanction anybody else for refusing visa without looking hypocritical. Which is basically an open invitation to any government to live out their political conflicts with other countries via refusing visa for FIG competitions. 100
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026So now, the FIG has created a situation where the Europeans can do an Indonesia and pull visa - and justify that with a flimsy pretense. The FIG cannot do anything about it, because - as mentioned - they need rich european feds to host stuff, and EG is still the largest continental union. 100
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026So, the floodgates were wide open back then, but just to make it even clearer to the Europeans and anybody else, they nailed them in place there. 100
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026... and which they thoroughly pissed off with their Russia decision. But they structurally cannot do without the Europeans, because they host likely the majority of FIG competitions. The FIG in it's current form would be done without Europe. (It might be done now anyway, but that's not the point.) 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026I don't think the FIG could have stopped or influenced anything last month, when they tried to "clarify" their decision on cancelling the AIN rules. They likely - in continuing their position of not taking a firm position - tried to appease the European nations, which are firmly Anti-Russian... 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026... competition (which would have been the correct decision, again) would have not only sucked for the gymnasts (again), but also annoyed a relevant (read: competition-hosting) federation, and made the FIG look even worse than they already did at that point. 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Final nail in the coffin: The FIG did, once again, not react forcefully to the decision of the major of Cluj Napoca not to allow Russian flags and symbols. Likely because they created a valid justification for Cluj Napoca themselves with their immediate readmittance of Russia. So cancelling the... 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026It might have been ugly and painful, but the FIG leadership probably had the votes for it. They could also phased it in instead, of doing it with immediate effect. Both steps would have made the position of the Europeans much harder to take and to defend. 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026I would say readmission of Russia and Belarus was only a matter of time. It needed to happen at some point. But there was really not excuse for doing it in the dumbest way possible - by the EC trying to present a fait accompli. They could have done this at the FIG congress. 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026It could have, maybe, stayed an exception if the FIG had not decided to annoy Europe next with the readmission of Russia, which was the second milestone here. To quote Douglas Adams: "This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." 120
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026The IOC threw a fit back then and tried what they could to punish Indonesia. I guess we can say now they did not overreact back then. We will never know it, but I think it is very likely we would not were we are today if the FIG had reacted differently back then and not set the precedent. 110
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Yes, that would have sucked for everybody involved, especially the gymnasts, with a lot of people already in Jakarta - but it would have sent a clear signal that any political meddling was unacceptable. The FIG did the opposite, and showed everybody that political meddling was acceptable. 100
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026The first milestone was the World Championships in Jakarta last year. The actions of the FIG - continuing with Worlds after Indonesia denied via to the Israeli delegation - are the original sin in all this. I think it is likely we would not be here if the FIG had immediately cancelled the thing. 120
Wayward Boy @wayward-boy.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Croatia has denied to grant visa for three Russian gymnasts (Melnikova, Kalmykova, Listunova) for WAG Euros in Zagreb next week. Russia is sending alternates. In my opinion, this is a situation that can become an existential threat to the FIG quite quickly. And it is completely self-made by the FIG. 132
