I lived near DC when they were building the Metro system, and it drove the geologists crazy -- the ground was a fucking maze of different rocks and soils, much of it unstable. It took them decades to get the Metro built because nothing was what they thought it would be before they started digging.

This happened to me once during my brief comics career, and I phoned the writer I was replacing to verify it was okay with her. She hadn't even known yet that she was off the book. Those editors were assholes. I didn't last long there.

I scripted a few comics. I never even spoke to any of the artists, let alone met them. Everything went through the editors -- and I didn't meet most of them, either. Oh, wait -- I did meet one artist who'd worked on a script I wrote for Tekno*Comix, but only after we'd both left the book.

I had one book I wrote solo show up with another author claiming half the author share. I'm guessing, since upon searching I found he's a real author with the same publisher, that this was an error rather than fraud, but we'll see.

I got my notice from Anthropic at 12:11 pm PDT today. They're coming; don't know if they'll meet that deadline. (Incidentally, thirty of my 31 claims were correct; the other appears to have a simple mistake, crediting someone I never heard of as my co-author on one book.)

When my first novel was published, back in 1980, the local newspaper ran a "local man makes good" feature article about me, and I got a call from a woman in town who said she and her friends wanted to write a book about how to be happily divorced, but they needed a real writer to help. 1/2

I didn't get to attend because it was opposite a panel I was on, but my wife attended a meet-up for corvid fans. I'm jealous. We have a murder of crows (we call them our crow buddies) who visit our yard every morning, so she got to compare notes with other crow fans.

The lack of an income tax makes it challenging, I think. And a couple of budgets back they overspent badly because of all that federal pandemic money; when that went away, well, that's why we're almost broke.
