Kemi Badenoch says “privatisation was a success”. Tell that to Britain’s rivers. Since privatisation, sewage has polluted our waterways while water bosses collect bonuses. Labour is repealing Thatcher’s ban on public ownership and giving Mayors stronger powers to hold companies to account.

If you believe this, I have a bridge to sell you. The prime directive of the Conservative Party is to get and hold power. The idea that it would risk throwing away the opportunity merely because it involved an albeit uncomfortable arrangement with another right-wing party is clearly for the birds.

The ability to pour hundreds of millions of pounds into a loss-making TV channel, bent on wrenching British politics sharply to the right, is yet another of the ways in which extreme wealth is trying to remake UK democracy. It needs to be part of any serious conversation about political funding.

This is truly disgraceful, and particularly so from a main stream political party. But, the greater shame must be applied to the wider journalist community. We must support free journalism not merely those we might like. The option is state controlled propaganda.
