Today in 1862, President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing the District’s 3,000+ enslaved people. Since 1866, DC.’s Black community has celebrated Emancipation Day, officially recognized in 2004, to honor the strength, dignity, and resilience of the fight for equal rights.
