Great news and an important promise kept for the entire community who call Eastwood Arena home. Thanks to City staff for the work they did to ensure Eastwood will open, on time, later this month to welcome back non ice programming to the North End. #HamOnt

The final edition of the Ward 2 Newsletter for this term of Council is out. In it I write about the engagement our office has done in this term and provide an update on rail pollution in the North End, Central, Beasley, and Corktown neighbourhoods. #HamOnt

Love over hate, every time. Great to join so many Hamiltonians at City Hall for the Hope Over Hate Rally today. We’ve been holding space here for years and we’ll keep doing it as long as it’s necessary, even if it sucks that it’s necessary. So proud of our city today. #HamOnt

It was wonderful to see the new children’s section up and running on the second floor of the library this morning. The funding for this relocation and renovation came from Ward 2 area rating reserves. It’s great! More space. Warmer atmosphere. Brighter natural light. Happy faces. It matters. #HamOnt

Hamilton council rejects Elfrida expansion plan
Decision follows provincial tribunal ruling to grow city’s urban footprint by 1,600 hectares.

The Ford government can keep trying to expand our urban boundary and we can keep pushing back. I think it’s important for Council to stand up to the Province, every step of the way. If Doug and his cronies are determined to attack our rural communities, we must literally stand our ground. #HamOnt

This is about air quality but also the BOH did pass a motion on air quality issues with respect to industrial fallout. We’re on it!

I appreciate this article from The Spec on the Board of Health vote yesterday asking the Federal government and CN Railway to eliminate the use of diesel in their Stuart Street Yard. Thanks, again, to residents from every Ward 2 neighbourhood for supporting this work. It matters. #HamOnt

Today was an important day at the Board of Health where my motion to ask the Federal government and CN Railway to electrify the Stuart Street Rail Yard passed. Our next step will be advocating to the powers that be. I’ll keep you posted. Our health shouldn’t be dictated by our postal code. #HamOnt

There's been a watermain break on Hunter Street East this morning. Thanks to City crews who are on site and have closed the roadway and bike lane from Ferguson Street South to Catharine Street South to do emergency repairs. Everything should be reopened by 5pm. #HamOnt

It’s rare to get to see a motion come to fruition in a single term of Council, so today was especially lovely. Investing in our community matters, especially when it means helping to support young people when they’re going through such a difficult time.

Electrify CN Rail & Stuart St Shunting Yard!

And these atmospheric conditions will remain. If CN is determined to continue its shunting operations in this location, they're going to have to clean up their act. This part of Hamilton already faces impacts from soot, carbon black, and other toxins. This is impacting everyone's quality of life.

Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 19/08/2026
Over this past winter, due to the area's unique atmospheric conditions, diesel fumes caused residents to be nauseous, have headaches, and otherwise feel trapped inside their homes due to the high presence of odours and other contaminants. This isn't new, but it's getting worse.

At Monday's Board of Health meeting I'll be tabling a motion calling on CN and the Federal government to electrify their Stuart Street Yard. Neighbours in the North End and Central, and across Wards 1, 2, and 3, continue to endure harmful impacts from CN's diesel pollution. #HamOnt

In our discussions with Ministers we raised concerns about the Province’s recycling program for small businesses, carbon black soot, and our aging water treatment facilities. We were received well and I’m hopeful about future discussions on these topics.

While I’m here I’ll also be sitting on a panel representing a group of Ontario Downtown Councillors, from about 20 of the Province’s largest cities, to talk about the issues all of us face and how we can work together to confront them collaboratively.

On a personal note, the meetings where the future of the Discovery Centre were passionately discussed were where I first got to know Shawn Selway, who isn't with us now, but who I think would be proud of where we're headed, with a justified dose of skepticism. Community finds a way.

Today was a full circle moment. After nearly a decade of activism from North Enders, including the North End Neighbourhood Association, advocacy from the Indigenous community, and good work from HPL staff, we got here. I see good things for this space as long as we keep on the path we set today.
120
Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
My motion ruffled a few feathers, but I ran on a commitment to helping to create space near the waterfront for Indigenous ceremony and thought it was important to keep my word. At that time, there hadn't been broad consultation and meaningful involvement. It mattered to me to get it right.

Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
At the West Harbour Development Sub-Committee, early in this term, after consulting with the City's Indigenous Relations staff, I put forward a motion asking for wide consultation with and meaningful involvement from the Indigenous community in the planning of the new library.
110
Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
In a fortunate twist of fate, before it looked like it might be too costly to back out of the lease, the Pier 8 developer cancelled the lease due to the downturn in the condo market. This finally meant we could get back to planning a library and HPL staff got on it right away.
120
Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
And, sure, a future promise was made to investigate the potential of a new library branch once the condo sales centre was no longer needed, but that didn't sit right with many of us. Before I was elected, I promised to do everything I could to cancel the lease and put the library at the forefront.
110
Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
I, like many other Ward 2 residents, wanted to see it put to good use. Suggestions included a civic museum and, yes, a library. Years later, when there was an opportunity to take action, the previous Council clumsily decided to lease the rights to the Discovery Centre to the Pier 8 sales team.
110
Ward 2 Hamilton @ward2hamilton.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
My involvement in the discussions about what to do with the Discovery Centre started when I first became active in Hamilton about a decade or so ago. I attended meetings about the future of the Discovery Centre with many of my neighbours who wanted to see good things for its future.

Striking workers are asking for fair wages and an incentive program that both makes sense and ensures they're paid when they participate. If you're able, go out and say hi to the striking workers, listen to their stories, and share what you can here and in your personal networks. Solidarity matters.

Kids learned classical music, had the opportunity to play a mini violin, and engaged in educational programming to explore movement, friendship, and play. Seeing the joy on the children's faces as they interacted with educators, musicians, and one another, was magical. It matters.

The vote against passing the Interim Control Bylaw to pause applications on AI data centres for a year only achieved one thing - keeping the public out of the decision making process. Here’s why I supported it, seconded it, and think Council made the wrong decision. #HamOnt
