He doesn't pay more tax, his English colleague pays less, and gets less public services in return. I never got it, how can you complain about the lack of public services, or the quality of it, when you are not prepared to pay for them? I always refer to this image to explain the high Dutch taxes:

Road tax? On the last car I owned when living in NL I paid €2952 (based on weight and emmisions). For the same car here, the road tax is £441. For my current car, a Ford diesel, I pay no road tax at all. The pothole problem is due to lack of maintenance and the UK's shrug-and-muddle-on attitude.
