19th Century Sophomore Trig Ceremonies at Vassar College.

In the 19th Century at Vassar After the first semester, to celebrate their completion of the rigorous and detested Trigonometry course, a committee selected by the sophomores would write and perform an original drama to initiate the freshmen class into the study. These Were called the Sophomore Trig Ceremonies.
The 1887 Trig Ceremony is the setting of one of the only surviving pictures of the Trig Ceremonies. An alarming group of five masked people with trigonometry elements on to their clothing, hold hands and circle around two figures on the ground who appear to be dead.
They are Adam and Eve, who are tempted to eat the apple of Trig in the Garden of Eden.

The Casino was the brain child of restaurateur Sidney Solomon, front man for a cabal of socialites and Tammany officials who felt the need, as Walker euphemistically put it, of a sanctuary in which they might “entertain visitors without being molested’” He asked the Mayor to let him establish one on the Casino, a low, rambling brick-and-stone building that had been built
in the park in 1864 ad a “Ladies Refreshment Salon” and had since been turned into a quiet little night club.

making an evaluation system, precise was perhaps the most difficult job in civil service, Moses explained; each job had to be broken down into component parts, so that each part could be graded, and in totaling the grades each part had to be given a mathematical weight corresponding to its importance in the job as a whole

Corruption before Moses had been unorganized, based on a multitude of selfish, private ends. Moses’ genius for organizing it and focusing it at a central source gave it a new force, a force so powerful that it bent the entire city government off the democratic bias.
