I commute via train to work in the suburbs and am the odd one out for not driving. The number of times people ask me how I got to work today because it's raining?!? Same way as always, just with an umbrella and boots?!? 🤷‍♀️

Something so satisfying about plowing right through puddles with the right footwear!

My kid goes to a neighborhood school where most kids can walk to school--and do in good weather. It's mindblowing to note the difference in traffic around the school on rainy days. The tiniest sprinkle and people bring out the 4000 lb metal raincoat instead of an umbrella and some rain boots. 🤯

As the realtor who showed me an apartment in the similar Lakeshore East Neighborhood told me: that’s for a reason. (I did not move there because of his advice)

I live in the Loop and am sheltering in place! Why was there a line of kids dressed for the club outside my building when I went to take my kid to summer day camp at 8:30 AM? 💀

Honestly, January & February don’t even bother me. I’m immune & ready for the cold. What does get to me is May. You can’t put your heavy coat away b/c half the time it is summertime & half is snowing. But I remember that that all of that precip is what makes summer so beautiful.

It’s a long drive here from my parents’ place in TN…going north through West Virginia then hooking a left.

Literally two people in that car are talking to each other… But also, what exactly else are they supposed to be doing? Salivating over him? People quietly entertaining themselves is generally my hoped-for train environment!

This is in Chicago and for the last couple of weeks our sidewalks have made more narrow than they already are by ice/snow. I’ve seen people with strollers have to lift them over ice piles to get past these. Get them off the sidewalk if they must exist at all.

Probably need to go visit my parents in TN over spring break—dad having health problems – but I had the same thought about not wanting to end up trapped on the wrong side. (Our original spring break plans back I fall had, ironically enough, been to go to Minneapolis, but like for tourist reasons!)

Yep. All it’s doing is reminding me to unsubscribe from a bunch of retailer mailing lists that I had lazily been letting go to my promotions box instead (where every now and then when one did tempt me to buy). AI—great for business!

How Did A Chicago Dog End Up With Rabies? PAWS Investigating After Alarming Discovery
The now-euthanized dog was the first to test positive for rabies in Cook County since before 1964 and the first in Illinois since 1994, according to public health officials.

I usually skip it but last week (not a holiday day) was walking, on my phone, making a decision on the fly about what order to run a couple errands in on based on store closing times, so I just went with it. Turns out it couldn't even tell me what time the Uniqlo at the mall closed correctly. 🫠

I used this with my students this semester as their final project. Not all of them got the concept, but a lot of them did and it was a really helpful tool to explain the difference between a simple rebuttal (which is what they were all inclined to do) and actually changing the framing!

Was just thinking this last week taking the bus around Quebec City, my first time visiting. Even took it out to Wendake at night in freezing weather. But btw their excellent service/signage, real-time tracking app & map app it was no worries. Very different than 20 yrs ago even taking buses I knew

Ha! You just saved me from having to double-check if the Opus card I pulled out of my closet was the right thing for the STM. Also PSA that weekly passes start on Mondays. So don't buy one of those if you arrive on the weekend and think it's gonna last you until the next one...

My mom would insist that's a waste of $ when they have cars I can borrow! But, of course, if I ask to borrow it it's either "Oh, we have [spare whatever I pretended to need to go buy just to get out of the house] in the basement!" or they want to come with...

Same with my parents’ place in TN (except warmer). There’s nowhere to walk to and no sidewalks even if there were. I could go pace around the backyard to get out I guess… It makes me feel so childish and trapped. Have managed to avoid it for 6 years now, but I’ll probably have to go back this year.

What I want people to know about intelligence is that it is always made better by humility. To never think you have all the answers. To know when to listen to others. To not expect people to reconfirm what you already know & instead, tell you something different. We could have had that in America🧵

The internet COULD have been a place where we become enlightened. The Age of Information. Instead, algorithms gave us feedback loops of our opinions. Telling us what we wanted to hear & giving us more confidence in disinformation than ever. Throwing us into a full-blown crisis of ignorance. 🧵

Yes! I am car-free, but on the occasions I've done a Zipcar for a specific errand I've found myself thinking "Oh, there's [place that's a pain to access via transit]! I should stop there!" But then I think about finding parking or getting in and out of the parking lot with traffic and don't.

Also, to be fair my mom was a teacher who did not drink coffee, but she just used it to buy coffee to gift to other people (which was a huge gift to me when I was a coffee drinking college student). Was better than the endless apple shaped Christmas ornaments anyway….

Fair. Do you have other gift card suggestions? We’ve just emerged from Public Montessori for three years where we knew what they liked to the world of only having a teacher for one year so we just don’t know them as well. My default used to be target but now that’s iffy.
