I’m pretty sure my GitHub commit graph is actually a graph of when the weather has been bad (hot, cold, snowy, rainy) and/or days have been short.

A GitHub commit graph, showing Git commits over the past year. The bulk of the commits came in December–February, almost none from mid-March through mid-June, and then a more modest number of commits from June through October.

Blog entry: Just about every agency is powered by a major software system, replaced every 10–30 years. This is so infrequent that the team performing each replacement is mostly or entirely comprised of people for whom this is their first rodeo. So how do you get this right the first time? […]

This is why I own a Chevy Bolt and an F-150 Lightning. None of this touchscreen bullshit. Both of them have all of the basic physical controls reasonable people want: door handles, AC controls, dials for the radio, dashboards studded with buttons. I won’t buy these stupid vehicles you have to […]

I borrowed a Festool track saw from the Cville Tool Library, and of all the tools that are not fucking around, the Festool track saw is the most not fucking around. I’d never used anything by Festool before, and I see why their stuff is so expensive. I made four perfectly straight cuts, so I can […]

It is 2026 and I just now realized that I could simply install a GUI SQLite viewer instead of using the CLI all the time. That took me ~20 years, but I got there.

A couple of weeks ago, reaching for a metaphor, I declared something to be “as useless as nipples on a chicken.” On reflection, I think I’ve invented a great aphorism, and I hereby release it into the world.

A black “X,” with one stroke solid, the other broader, filled in white.

This isn't *fast*, but I'm fine with that. (My MacBook has 24 GB of RAM.) Anybody used to the speed of Claude et al would find this ponderous, but I just need to trickle a few thousand articles through this, with no particular deadline. But if this works well, I'll find other excuses to use it […]

I'm impressed to see IBM's Granite LLM model, which is open source, with open weights, trained exclusively on non-copyrighted text. I'm running it on my M5 MacBook Pro right now, for a big text-summarization project. No ethical concerns, either in training or in operating…I think I've found an […]

Have you read a government/organizational report that you really liked? Maybe you loved the format, maybe the tone, maybe the design, maybe the structure, but whatever it was, would you share a link? I'm looking for some some models.

@kgjenkins Yeah, DNS's hierarchical nature has pretty much been discarded for government. :-/

Waldo Jaquith @waldoj.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy · 11/09/2026

@kgjenkins I wonder if the Dotgov rules *allow* delegation? 🤔 I hadn't stopped to consider that. CISA's process verifies that the applicant has the power to speak on behalf of that jurisdiction. If e.g. New York's process isn't up to CISA's standard, I wonder if that's a problem for CISA?

101 1

Waldo Jaquith @waldoj.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy · 11/09/2026

@kgjenkins They can, but that would require that states run a DNS, their own sort of sub-.gov, and AFAIK no state has ever shown the interest or capacity for that.

@dockson.bsky.social Because then I'm gonna get emails and have a Relationship with this company and I do not want that, I just want to see what the software looks like. Requiring that I create an account in order to test-drive software is an anti-pattern.

I just remembered that we used to have to park our drive heads on MFM and RLL hard drives. There was a "PARK" command you'd use to tell it to move the drive heads off the platters, so if you were physically moving your computer, you wouldn't have to worry about it banging into the platters.
