I agree. And then it’s treading the thin line between ‘realistic’ and what one of my writing mentors used to call ‘bus stop’ dialogue - meaningless, bland conversation that doesn’t reveal character, make us laugh or move the plot along.

I came here to say this. As a relatively new, independently published author, getting a couple of lines of praise from better known writers is huge. I’ve definitely sold books based on nice things respected authors in my genre have said.

Good point. WHERE it’s taking place is really important. I try to make each person distinctive - I use the tip of reading it aloud without the speech tags and still knowing who is speaking.

Ah yes. The lure of ‘research’! We’ve all been there. When I’m in the first draft, I use square brackets and write things like [NEED ALARM INFO HERE] just so that I don’t stop and procrastinate. But it’s hard.

I agree. I honestly think that readers who appreciate good fiction, that’s interesting, human and original, will continue to do so. There are already some readers who are happy to read any old crap, as long as it’s free.
