RUNNER UP FAVORITE: Godzilla Come on it's Godzilla. Unique among the rest of the films in this era and very likely still the best one. Probably timeless.

I like this characterization for Godzilla. He gives off the impression that he doesn't even really mean to terrorize humanity but he's at his most destructive here anyway. Also one of the few movies to really show the ground level effects of all the destruction. It's rare to see individual civilians dying from this point on especially from Godzilla's actions. The ending is really strong too but I'll probably get into that more when we talk about the winners of the best human cast.

FAVORITE MOVIE: Godzilla vs. Hedorah The closest there is to a film that actually matches the themes of the original but that is still about Godzilla fighting another giant monster. In a lot of ways this feels like a proper sequel to the OG. That one might still be better but this is one of a kind.

Hey I figured out how to use the alt text to include more thoughts!

Plus the destruction and violence is about as brutal as it gets for this era. People get reduced to skeletons for pete's sake!! Hedorah is horrifying and cruel in the sense that I don't think a lot of the other monsters target civilians on purpose. It doesn't mean the collateral damage isn't scary either though. That scene where goji spins hedorah around and accidentally kills a room full of people across town and it cuts to all the dead bodies half submerged in sludge was spooky as fuck. I'm glad the kitty was okay though. You know I wonder if there was any deeper meaning to this movie. Probably not. Overall this one kind of felt like if Godzilla starred in an episode of Anthology of the Killer and that's kind of like the best thing ever.

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) A pretty solid way to end the era! I like the human element in this one which is funny because it goes some totally bonkers places. There are some really good shots like when Godzilla enters. Mechagodzilla in this movie reminds me of how my friend plays Robo Fortune.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) Hits all the standards you want from one of these movies. They had a freakin beam struggle!!! Godzilla can power up with lightning now? Maybe Kong taught him how... I can see why Mechagodzilla became a favorite with long staying power 'cause he totally rules.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) Kind of meandering. It was the right move to pair Jet Jaguar up with Godzilla, he’s a fantastic team player over a solo effort! Gigan and Megalon have great chemistry so it’s a shame they never teamed up again. DROPKICK!!! Did I mention that Jet Jaguar is awesome?

Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) A little slow in parts but Gigan makes up for it by being an absolute beast. He's got a sawblade for a front what else do you want? I'm sorry I ever doubted you Anguirus! You were great in our first proper tag team outing. Maybe hurt a little by all the B roll usage.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) AWESOME!! Haunting and psychedelic and creepy. Everything about Hedorah is just so awful (in a very positive sense!!). The fights were BRUTAL too. A new personal favorite. Everyone went “how he do that??” when Godzilla did the thing. You know the one.

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 12/08/2026

All Monsters Attack (1969) Godzilla at least had more relevance to the plot of this movie than Invasion of Astro Monster. It's still the worst of the lot though. I know there was no budget but this was the best you could come up with? I do wish Godzilla was my friend though (Minilla is my enemy).

440

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 12/08/2026

Destroy All Monsters (1968) The human half of the story was uncharacteristically action packed and violent this time around. Then we finally get the blowoff to the feud with Ghidorah... I was happy to see Anguirus show up again for the finale. And Gorosaurus had his career defining moment!!

150

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 09/08/2026

Son of Godzilla (1967) Minilla kinda sucks but in a funny way sort of. Maybe he'll grow on us in time though. Other than that I don't have a lot to say about this movie.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) I didn't know what felt so weird about this one until it clicked that it was probably supposed to be a King Kong movie (and I was right!). It was alright though! Ebirah gets some proper build which is important. The soundtrack was really funny for some reason?

Invasion of Astro-Monster (1966) It was ok. I enjoyed the two astronauts being buddies. The thing is... Godzilla and pals honestly don't have much impact on the movie!!! You could take them out and not much would change. He had an awesome victory dance though...

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) Godzilla finally turns face after someone calls up Mothra so she can tell him and Rodan to quit being such huge pricks all the time. Whoever is working the suits in this one was clearly having a lot of fun. Ghidorah has one cool ass entrance too.

140

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 30/07/2026

Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) The first one of these to explicitly have a face/heel matchup! But Godzilla as the heel almost doesn't feel right... it was funny when his ass got dragged though. I like how every movie he has to break out of whatever imprisoned him last time. Also Mothra is very pretty..

140

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 28/07/2026

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962) WOW that was a welcome change from the last one. The structure of this movie is such an immense amount of fun. And they remembered to properly book the big fight too!! It could only have been improved if Kong got to spin Godzilla all the way around like Mario 64.

The Japanese theatrical release poster for King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962).

Godzilla Raids Again (1955) This sucks. Bizarre pacing, it’s like the movie ends and there’s a second first act for the last 30 minutes. Lots of weirdly placed filler. Anguirus isn’t exactly an A-list opponent but hey he’s only the first one. At least there are some ok shots. Sidequest ass movie.

160

WYD 🔞 @w3d.bsky.social · 27/07/2026

Godzilla (1954) This felt like a good introduction and standalone. Godzilla is kind of a jerk in this one. I appreciate how the giant monster isn’t as important as how people react to his presence and what it means for the world. I would recommend seeking this one out today ‘cause it’s still good.
