Trump’s ex-chief of staff John Kelly said this to me, six years ago: “I don't know how he’s not in an institution somewhere, whether it’s jail or a nuthouse. He’s a seriously sick guy. I never heard him saying anything that wasn’t a lie.” Trump has only gotten worse since.

The real hidden costs are in lost / deferred maintenance, fuel and ammo. Part of the reason you don’t immediately report on lost aircraft is that it can help adversary targeting. I am against Trump’s war, but we’ve been lucky/good in protecting our troops relative to the risks.

Americans pay billions to for-profit prison companies to incarcerate people. Their financial incentives reward keeping beds filled; some contracts pay even when beds are empty. Profits go to company owners and investors, not the public that funds them. That’s a profound conflict of interest.

Our system is structured to keep that from happening. For most middle class people- healthcare, childcare, their jobs- are all arrayed so they cannot afford to confront the police state. Regular people aren’t Mitch McConnell- if they are arrested or go on strike they & familes face economic ruin.
