It is generally good life advice that if you ever hear some "everyone knows" third party gossip about a trans creator or public figure, your 1st instinct should be to disbelieve it, your 2nd instinct should be NOT to pass it on, and 3rd to check VERY THOROUGHLY who's saying it and where it came from

There’s this running subplot in book two in which a teen girl who’s good with a sword is becoming a figurehead for the revolution but we see her only through the POVs of the adults who are mentoring her and/or manipulating her and it’s a fun way to think about YA tropes

I think publishers don’t have a good grasp on how to reach these young men or how to make their books easily available to them. It’s not an agents and editors problem but a marketing/publicity/sales problem

But he doesn’t know what books are coming out next month, what won which awards, what’s new and “buzzy.” He’s not on Booktok or Instagram. He’s as likely to read a book from the 70’s as a new release and he rarely ever makes the drive to Barnes and Nobles. He reads what’s convenient.

I think part of this is that trad publishers are having a harder time communicating with them about what’s there. I know this 26yo guy who loves SFF—he reads a ton of stuff online and goes to the library across the street and grabs anything with a sword or spaceship. He reads 2-3 books a week.

Honestly this is why I don’t kill a lot of characters in my books. Losing someone you’re invested in can often make a story weaker. It really has to be for the right reasons.

The popularity of his work has really shaped what readers expect of secondary-world SFF and it has become a lot harder to position more thematically-complex books in that space.

I think this is really due to Sanderson’s influence and his insistence that genre fiction, especially secondary-world fantasy, where he dominates, should prioritize entertainment over developing themes or interrogating ideas.

This is very true. There is an assumption that secondary-world fantasy is primarily escapist entertainment, with no deeper themes or literary value.

Definitely NOT a badge of honor, as Meg notes below. As a brown midlist author, it's hard enough to get the word out about my books--so if they get banned, that's it. You can't buy or borrow what you don't know exists. (And the author gets blamed for poor sales numbers and can't sell future books.)
