It's weird how now that billionaires control all the social platforms the far right is starting to get big electoral wins all around

I wanted to laugh, and I did. but also I dunno. There's something going on. It's like nothing can be worth doing for the process of doing it. It's all about the result. Get the Summary of the book instead of reading it. Get a fantasy team so that you can say you do it, not for the experience of it.

Just saw someone say their AI runs their fantasy football team and I can’t stop laughing. Like, I’m sure everyone’s doing it or something but it’s very funny to me that pretending to be a team manager was so hard that you needed to pretend to pretend to be a team manager

A customer just tried to use an employee discount code that ChatGPT gave her. I work at a high-end clothing store and clocked in to my manager telling me about the most unhinged interaction from yesterday. A woman walked in asking if she could use a 40% off code she got online. We don't have any sales running, so my manager looks at the screen and realizes ChatGPT straight up handed this woman a real employee's internal ID number.

"Too much playtesting" doesn't sound like a thing that exists.

Watching a guy say that the problem with Wolverine is that it did too much playtesting. And I really dunno.

They basically turned her into Britta. Which btw was also character-assassinated.

I honest to god think that Simpsons Skit with Lisa first trying to enter the football team was character assassination.

And if people are clueless about this. CEOs are even worse. You can say all you want that LLMs are only useful for coding and we shouldn't use them for other things. The CEOs are hearing "WOW, CLAUDE CAN CODE NOW IMAGINE HOW EASY IT'D BE FOR IT TO REPLACE OTHER JOBS".

Now when some stupid asshole tries to scam you into using their vibe coded shit as if it was a real project and you try to object, you will get retorts such as "but so and so is using AI". It doesn't matter that it is the Linux kernel using it responsibly. People don't understand the difference.
120
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
Like Linus Torvalds welcomed AI open-armed on Linux development but I know for a fact that for all his faults he would never let shit code in. I was never worried that it would lead to "vibe coded" Linux.
120
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
But the thing that has finally convinced me is that. It doesn't matter how responsibly you try to use it. You are still helping normalizing it.
120
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
The LLMs are also a very dangerous kind of tool in that they can be correct like 90% of the time. So you become trustful of the tool and then the 10% hits you and you are in for a ride.
120
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
But there are also other factors. If I had to describe my job it's not coding things. My job is to understand things. When there's a change to do, I know exactly where the code that needs the change is.
120
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
For starters, the many times the stupid AI actually screwed and made me lose more time than if I actually did the thing. It's honestly too much of a hassle. I got to mention I am a weird kind of developer. I've never. EVER. Liked becoming dependent to a tool. I don't even like syntax auto complete

The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
At work I've been trying to use AI for simple things because they are starting to watch our token usage as if it was a metric that meant anything. Trying to do the approach at the beginning of the thread. There are ways you can get advantage of it. But lately? I've decided I won't do that shit.
130
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
But for important stuff, it's really not something you want to rely on.
041
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
For work it also doesn't matter, like who even cares about work? Most of the stuff made by tech startups is crap that doesn't matter. It is less important than hobby stuff because at least some people care about the hobby stuff. Ultimately just hurts the dev, which won't get to learn stuff.
151
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
Now, when it is some hobby thing. It doesn't matter. Their projects can just die and nobody would care. It's a pretty bad thing that they can end up wasting a lot of other people's time, though. Like you think you are getting a cool new thing, but instead it's some vibe coded crap with no future.
141
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
Basically you are creating lots of problems for "later". Problems that you won't be able to solve because you have no idea what is being coded. If you keep the project going it means more and more AND more LLM interactions (= costs). Even then, the project will die. More LLM use is more tech debt.
185
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
Some devs are doing a lot more with it. They are using LLMs to code the whole thing. Sometimes/Often times without even understanding the thing. These devs are neither saving time nor problems. They are just pumping out tech debt.

The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
What is really doing is simplifying the cognitive load. There's less things to put your mind on. This doesn't save time but it does make you feel like you are putting less work on it while simultaneously making your brain less capable of doing it on your own.
151
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
Devs aren't saving time with it. For starters code was never the thing that takes time. Having more code is actually a bad thing. The thing about boiler plate and simple changes is that you too can also code them fairly quick. Devs might think it's speeding them up.
171
The People's Luigi @vx0.bsky.social · 7h
LLMs can be useful for coding if you are using them to speed up repetitive work that you already understand. If you limit the impact and scope of the changes. Responsibly. You might even get a 5% productivity boost from it! But even then there's a chance it will screw up and cause a delay instead.

Just so we are clear, vibe-coded "decomp" projects are a plague that bring nothing good nor new to the world of retro gaming. They should get the scorched earth treatment.

It has finished today. Full on finish. Actual ended. This is rare for romcoms. I gotta say the ending was kind of weak. Harmless but weak. As whole it was a pretty great run, though. It will remain in my favorites. Just think a more complete ending would have put this one REALLY high on the list.

Why? Because no matter how much you isolate the environmental damage. No matter how guaranteed it is to give useful results. Even if somehow you were certain it would not do plagiarism. You are still helping normalize a thing and this normalization will encourage the "less ethical" usage.

"Isn't it okay to use AI for [...]? or if it is local AI or if [..]?" Look, I am not your boss and there are situations where it is unavoidable. But I gotta say the ethics of AI usage are pretty much cooked.

Should AI ever have rights? No. Because Openthropic, gApple and Twittersoft all have a button they can poke to change the output of the AI. That's why it doesn't matter if it is ever "intelligent" or whatever. An AI voting is equal to a company voting. It'd be nefarious and dumb.

AI can't make art. lol. The jury's still out on whether or not it is possible to make Art with AI. But saying that AI makes art is like saying Photoshop makes art. And that'd be pretty dumb.

I marvel at how Jim Henson’s brain worked. This was a presentation piece to the executives at CBS when he was trying to get them, ultimately unsuccessfully, to pick up THE MUPPET SHOW... But if you’re a TV executive sitting in a boardroom watching this, there’s no way it’s not leaving an impression.
