Being a distributed network of records, a search interface can focus on a niche like pet supplies or geographically local sellers which is technically much easier + cheaper than "maintain a sortable filterable index on everything sold on the network".

It's distinct in that the interface can focus on being good. I hate shopping on amazon because search just shows who paid the most for ranking and the filters never work. And I've seen the interface for sellers... It'll take an ounce of effort to improve qol on both sides.

Do you like fast network replay? How does ~40 million events per second strike you? Replay the whole network in like 10 minutes In the best case scenario, running the jetstream server and the client on your own very powerful machine, this is roughly the peak I've achieved so far

at its core, a relational db is essentially a 1) key/value store with software on top to facilitate 2) querying and 3) consistency among nodes atproto splits up these concerns and has them operate independently: 1. key/value storage -> pds 2. querying -> appview 3. consistency -> relays, firehose
