The Senate's decision comes amid growing recognition that the most consequential issues facing Canada -- including housing affordability, climate change, technological transformation, and democratic resilience itself -- will shape the lives of young people for decades to come.

Importantly, the committee's mandate extends beyond voting age reform. It will also examine barriers to democratic participation faced by marginalized youth, as well as the role of civic education and digital environments in fostering informed democratic engagement.

This represents the most comprehensive examination of youth voting rights ever conducted by Parliament and creates a historic opportunity to advance one of the last major frontiers of democratic inclusion in Canada.

It’s time to lower the voting age in Canada to 16. Here are the many reasons why
Voter turnout is dropping. Ensuring a strong democracy and a lack of apathy means widening the electorate to include more young people

Besides, young people are already trusted with significant responsibilities. 51.3% of 15- and 16-year-olds in PEI were employed last summer. That means they're paying sales taxes and EI premiums out of their own pockets, with no say on the money's use. www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/c...

In PEI’s 2016 referendum on electoral reform, 16- and 17-year-olds were allowed to vote as equals with all other electors. The result? Youth aged 16–17 turned out to vote at higher rates than voters aged 18–44. Engagement didn't drop -- it rose. policyoptions.irpp.org/2017/04/the-...
