Now I think I've solved it. The invented concept I want to write about (noetic interface) is not a fragile thing that must be embedded in an alternate world or safer past to flourish, its an embodiment of those exact near-future changes that remain uncertain. This is what science fiction is for.

I was struggling to write a science fiction novel set in the near future because from where I'm standing the "near future" looks to be a precipice between recognizable civilization and something already science fictional (either cyberpunk or post-apocalyptic) before I even add my novum.

I think what causes the negative reaction to this is less the actual time passage (20 years is a pretty fair age for "retro") but rather that "retro" originally indicated the shift from 2D to 3D, whereas now there's no decisive technological break to give these consoles a justifyingly "retro" feel.
