Omw to @goldschmidt-confer.bsky.social in Montreal. Can't wait to see some awesome geochem research! Check out my talk on Ijen volcano first thing Tuesday (conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/...) and a poster on REEs in Kalimantan granites (conf.goldschmidt.info/goldschmidt/...) Tuesday evening 😁
The Ijen Caldera Complex (ICC) in East Java, Indonesia is defined by 10+ eruptive centers distributed over 200 km2. The eastern rim of the ICC hosts Kawah Ijen, an active stratovolcano with a hyperacidic brine crater lake. Despite close study over the last few decades, there lacks a systematic framework for integrating petrological, field, and geochemical insights across the ICC. In this work, we present the results of several phases of research conducted at the ICC since 2023, combining a range of geochemical, textural, field, and computational methods. We focused our attention on three ICC eruptive periods: (1) the caldera-forming eruption or CFE (2) the monogenetic scoria cones of the intracaldera (IC) series; and (3) the 1817 CE phreatomagmatic eruption of Kawah Ijen. The earlier eruptive periods have not been systematically mapped. This work presents the first phase of a revised stratigraphic column for the region, indicating a that the ICC grew out of five major ignimbrites with interspersed cyclic pumice falls. Furthermore, we evaluate the likely petrogenetic source of CFE vs. later magmas in relation to major regional geochemical reservoirs. We also show what eruptive processes predominate at monogenetic centers littering the caldera floor today. For the 1817 eruption, we have developed two complementary tools for analyzing vesicles in pyroclasts from the ICC. We introduce a Python-based reimplementation of the FOAMS framework [1] for stereological analysis of vesicle number and size distributions in 2D thin sections of deposits from the 1817 eruption. PyFOAMS replicates the original software’s core functions while adding automated preprocessing and updated stereological formulas. We also compare these 2D results with 3D micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) data from select ICC samples. These were trained with deep learning models to segment the ICC rock volumes using the open-source Dragonfly program.Rare earth elements (REE) enrichment is a defining characteristic of magmas within the Southeast Asian Tin Belt, yet the processes driving this metal concentration remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate the petrological and geochemical characteristics of magmatic suites from two representative areas—Belitung and West Borneo, to understand the tectonic and magmatic controls on the REE budgets in the region. The Belitung granitoids exhibit S‑type affinities and strong association with syn-collisional setting. These magmas show elevated REE and other incompatible elements, coupled with depleted Sr–Ba and strong negative Eu anomalies. These characteristics culminate in substantially higher ΣREE values, suggesting late‑stage, multi‑phase feldspar fractionation as the primary enrichment mechanism. On the other hand, the West Borneo granitoids, predominantly I‑type, show lower levels of melt evolution and ΣREE, with strong geochemical signals of subduction‑related early-arc magmatism. REE-enriched phases are present, but volumetrically low, in Belitung magmas, and are absent in the West Borneo suite. Our in-situ crystal analysis of non-REE-bearing major rock-forming phases (e.g., amphibole, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and biotite) highlights amphibole as a key REE‑hosting phase in volatile‑rich magmas. This evidence suggests that the delayed crystallization of REE-bearing accessory minerals may elevate REE in residual melts which likely increases REE uptake of these major phases. Finally, our petrogenetic model suggests that distinct tectonic context controls on magma evolution may result in the contrasting REE signatures between Belitung and West Borneo, providing a solid framework for targeted critical‑mineral exploration in Southeast Asia.

Crux of the findings: melt inclusion degree of crystallinity fit to classical nucleation theory and then time intervals of crystal growth. Conclusion is that melt inclusions start growing daughter crystals around the same time earthquakes and gas emissions kick off before May 18 1980 MSH eruption!
Histogram of melt inclusion abundance vs. melt inclusion volume separated into inclusions that are all glass (337 inclusions) and those that contain some crystals (65 inclusions). The largest inclusions contain crystals, whereas the smallest are dominated by crystal-free glass, as observed by Roedder (1976) in the rocks that he studied.Plot of duration, Δt, vs. the time-average nucleation rate, ⟨J⟩. The value of ⟨J⟩Δt calculated from the melt inclusions is plotted as the solid blue diagonal line. The uncertainties (dashed blue lines) are estimated from the minimum and maximum values of ⟨J⟩Δt calculated from the melt inclusion fits, as discussed in the text. These uncertainties are equal to, or a little greater than, the 95% confidence bounds calculated by the Matlab “fit” function calculation of ⟨J⟩Δt. Note that durations <0.1 day (2.4 h) and nucleation rates>1010 nuclei m−3 s−1 are not plotted in the figure. The range in measured nucleation rates from the studies cited in Figure 7 is plotted as bars across the top of the figure, and the intersection of the minimum nucleation rates in each study (vertical dashed lines) with the value of ⟨J⟩Δt provides a maximum estimate of Δt. The gray transition region between tabular and hopper plagioclase habits (see Fig. 7) is thought to be the best method for the estimation of ⟨J⟩ for the melt inclusions. The intersection of its boundaries with the ⟨J⟩Δt line yields the best estimates of Δt, from ∼4 to 100 days. Please see the text for further details.

We have been successful in defeating this attempt to suppress my free speech. This was always an issue that threatens all of us. I'm deeply grateful to the many people who leapt courageously to this struggle. In challenging this suspension, my goals were twofold: most urgently, to return to my classrooms and continue the important work of critically examining the world and our relationship to it with my smart, thoughtful, and curious students. Secondly, I wanted to disabuse UNC's leaders of the notion that they can infringe on our constitutional right to speak and assemble as we choose.
