as a programmer, I feel an incredibly dissonant grief about AI. I'd love to find a cutting-edge technology cool and exciting, but the ruling class will happily automate every person out of existence and destroy the planet in the process. this is not an inevitable threat, but they want it to be.

basically the guiding mindset of capitalism and fascism at large. you literally cannot reach the levels of power these people have without a complete disdain for reflection, on how your actions exist in the real world and affect real people. the only meritocracy that exists is one of sociopathy

heartbroken. Trilogie De La Mort basically changed the way I understood what music could be. highly recommend checking out her work, some of the most transcendent music there is

we have files from literally this week about countless rich people doing the most heinous shit imaginable the fact that these people still try to peddle literal blood libel is going to make me lose it

pizzagate and qanon were not onto something, they were orchestrated by pedophiles to make accusing people of pedophilia make you look insane so that they could continue doing pedophile shit. fucking christ

the fact that there is very likely a direct line between Epstein and Gamergate, and in turn a direct line between Gamergate and the alt right, might actually be the thing that makes me lose my mind

feeling lost and at a loss with everything going on. been trying to see what mutual aid and community groups are in the area because it feels absolutely unbearable to not at least try to do something

gonna be a lefty bearcat real quick and say that borders are made up, *nations* are made up, we must vehemently fight the endangerment or oppression of any peoples anywhere at the hands of fascism and imperialism

the fun thing about psychology as a field is that neurotypicality is used as the baseline by default so a lot of the research we have on autism is just that we "fail" at being neurotypical it's like telling someone they're failing a game that you designed for yourself to be good at

I do wish there were more comorbidity research on these issues; the author's Twitter thread notes that autism frequently has its own unique set of sleep disturbances, and it's difficult to tell what exactly the implications are, given the prevalence of co-occurring autism and ADHD

oh my god the thought of using LLMs to develop OS code is actually nauseating. it's like actually critically important that OS code functions properly and they're leaving that task up to The Hallucination Machine

this is just unironically true psychologically, and is honestly too generous. a lot of people are working with an emotional and logical capacity they developed when they were like...eight, at the latest

absolutely not looking forward to the societal discourse on nonbinary people if how it's going so far is that we're fearmongering without even saying the word nonbinary

I'm always in awe of people who make video games, but I have at least a general idea of how to make one; making a TTRPG is like wizardry to me, could not even tell you the first thing about how to do that

saw folks on autistic subreddits saying "this person is problematic because they say self diagnosis is valid" and like I won't pretend there's a consensus on this but y'all know that *diagnosis* is constructed, right mis- and *missed* diagnosis happens literally all the time

so as someone who was planning on applying to postgrad programs this year, what exactly is the recourse here do I apply anyways and hope programs I apply for don't get cut? do I look internationally? do I take a nap for the next 3-6 years? that last option is increasingly appealing

parallel to the "conservatism is a pedophile cult" theory is an idea I've held to strongly lately: that America is a culture of cyclical, intergenerational abuse and repressed trauma as the foundation of normalcy. abuse becomes easy to excuse in a society of dissociation and compartmentalization

really love how the past decade of technofascist dorks telling people "learn to code" just immediately crumbled the second they had access to something that looked like it would code for them. sucks to suck

this is an interesting study, but it's immensely frustrating how autism is treated like a genetic black box instead of something that is also neurological, developmental and *sociological* in nature. this group was *37%* of participants, the largest subtype! there are more factors at play here!
"The Social and Behavioral Challenges group had more mutations in genes that became active after birth, Litman and Troyanskaya say, which could explain why these participants did not have developmental delays and tended to be diagnosed later than those in the other three groups."

from a psychology perspective, there is no real recourse for this, it's baked into the design. it's a machine that has no intent, that can emulate any *sentiment*, and that explicitly matches and amplifies the user's tenor. it is, in many ways, talking into a mirror as if it's someone else.

I think we've passed the event horizon of how people engage with AI. offering a facade of skills that have been systematically dismantled (critical thinking, synthesis) with a simulation of affirming, uncritical empathy means there might be a sense of genuine connection that's hard to disentangle

the opening anecdote to van der Kolk's "The Body Keeps The Score" is about Vietnam vets who were essentially neurologically trapped in those traumatic times and my research has basically just been "oh okay so that happens to entire societies every 30-ish years and we don't address it, cool"

folly @voidfolly.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
I've started doing research on neurological trauma in a sociological context and I've come to the shocking inconceivable conclusion that most of history is traumatizing and also institutions don't give a shit, who could have known

"what about mindless corporate work like writing emails" do you understand how easy writing emails is if you actually understand how to put your thoughts into words. you could write a better email faster than it takes to ask ChatGPT if you literally just practice words
