Evidence shows that the low price of alcohol increases consumption everywhere. @vitalstrategies.org compared the price of beer and some basic food items in 'The Price is Right: Alcohol vs Essentials' in Brazil today. Beer was the cheapest and most affordable item even when compared to basic foods.

On today's The Price Is Right: Alcohol vs. Essentials, we travel to Brazil and see how the price of beer compares to everyday essentials like coffee, beans, and rice. The verdict? Beer was the cheapest of them all. A product that causes harm shouldn't be more affordable than the essentials.

And cheaper alcohol = more consumption = more harm. Alcohol causes over 200 diseases and conditions and leads to social and economic harm. Increasing alcohol taxes is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce alcohol harm. Clearly, alcohol shouldn’t be cheaper than eggs or public transit fares.

What if we told you that alcohol costs less than eggs 🍳? Last April, we played a game with our RESET Alcohol partners at the 2026 Global Alcohol Policy Conference in Rio—and the results were eye-opening. In a lot of countries, alcohol is still shockingly affordable compared to basic everyday items.
