What's very interesting is that one of the archetypes of abusive men is "Mr Sensitive", a man who uses his apparent feminism as a shield for his misogyny and abuse. We've seen it time after time. Doing a feminism can go hand in hand with being an abuser. It's not a sign of rehabilitation.

With sexual assault being so prominent in the news I wrote this short piece. I hope it brings light to the average woman's experience of sexual violence.

When I was 17 my friend told me she'd been raped. She was drunk at an event and a friend took her outside and raped her. It was 2007 and I didn't have empathy for her. She often got drunk and flirted with guys. She was beautiful and liked the attention. It was bound to happen eventually. I didn't have empathy for her rape, because I didn't think it would happen to me. Or at least, if it did, it would be one of those lesser rapes like when your boyfriend does it, or when you end up saying yes because it's easier than saying no.

I first wrote a version of this essay when I was 24 and at that time I said I was the only woman I knew that hadn't been raped. That was a lie, but I didn't know what it was. I mean there was that one time when I continually said no to my boyfriend and he penetrated me anyway, but I carried on then so it's essentially fine. And there was that time I had a horrendous UTI, but it was my 19th birthday and he said it was his birthday present to me, so I just bore through the pain to receive my gift because I didn't want to make him feel bad about not getting me anything. But ya know, that's just part of being a woman isn't it?

My sister once said to me, "you've probably been raped and don't remember it. Men tend to just do that." The statement was ridiculous to me, a woman that had definitely not been raped. When my friend woke up and saw her friend violating her unconscious body and the police took us to a cabin in the woods so she could have a rape kit and then they arrested the guy, though she dropped the charges because it's not worth ruining his life over and he probably got the message from the arrest anyway. That was like a proper rape and that hadn't happened to me.

What had happened to me was more like what had happened to my friend when we were 14, where she got black out drunk at a house party and her boyfriend carried her to a local park, sat her on a bench and sexually assaulted her. It's something that feels icky, like you know th…
