Imo the essential thing is that you have to have a vision for yourself, your body of work, your audience etc that’s beyond short-term incentives. if you just respond to the incentives you’ll become annoying. You gotta want better for yourself and your people. This takes ~discipline + ~principles

I think so! Probably main thing i’d add would be to be more deliberate about building 1-1 relationships with people beyond the platforms- dm, get people’s contact info, email, etc, because the algorithms seem to keep nudging people towards For You timelines rather than Following

@visakanv.com‘s description of good work having “an idea in the car” echoes the feeling of reading a lot of AI writing. The human impulse towards efficiency strips all the dynamic life from the writing. Lots of interesting parallels between the photocopier and LLMs as well, prob not a coincidence.

When my work does well, it's usually because the idea was driving. But then I get cocky, or arrogant, and think, "I was there. I was involved. That was successful. should drive this time." And it doesn't work, because there's no idea in the
car.

Absolute gem in @visakanv.com‘s FAN. To paraphrase: Ppl who are blindly confident are unlikely to worry about being blindly confident So if you worry about being blindly confident, you likely don’t need to worry about it as much as you do (esp if worrying holds you back from doing what want to do)

Which is not to say we're all doing basic research, but I think it's much happier to reserve time for seemingly-unimportant work. It helps thread the needle of the @visakanv.com meme that lives in my head:
A depiction of Odysseus sailing between Scylla and Charybdis. One side is labeled "life is devastatingly meaningless", while the other is labeled "life is excruciatingly meaningful". Odysseus's boat passes through the middle, labeled "ayy lmao"

There’s a throughline in these 3 seemingly disparate @visakanv.com tweets: specificity. Lots of latent fears prevent people from being specific: - of loneliness - of rejection - of failure Counterintuitively the opposite is true. Specificity makes connection, acceptance, and success more likely.
people tend to think "It's unrealistic if not impossible to make a living doing what you love" because their model assumes you're not going to talk to 100,000 people
but once you have a decent-enough product that even 1% of people like, then it's just a matter of distributionwhenever I try to put together some kind of
"master resource" it almost always ends up being overwrought and tedious
when | write something like a personal recommendation doc for a friend, it almost always ends up being useful for other people and way easier to share tooimo: if you email an author about a very specific bit of their work, and tell them a short story of how precisely that work affected you, and the before/after of how that changed something in your life, you'll instantly be in the top 0.1% of emails they've loved receiving
