It's been a while since I posted some #NES #pixelart. 9 colors across the four palettes. I've been assured this can be made to work with a 16x8 color attribute if the programmer bangs their head on the keyboard for long enough.

NES-compliant castle scene, made on the NAW editor by @nesrocks.bsky.social to take advantage of the 8x8 atributes supported by the amazing BB-Studio (a NES target game maker, fork of GB-studio) by @michel-iwaniec.bsky.social
NES videogame scene of a castle made of brown-grey stone blocks, with cast shadows, a brick texture and bright highlights, seen from a rotated top-down angle, over a background of distant trees. It features dark green grass tiles, bright blue water pools, and yellow-brown wooden crates.

Mario Paint on the SNES plugged to my kid TV. Lazy afternoons after school, 16 garish colors, a sprite canvas of 16x16, and a dozen or so blank sprite slots under that spec. I was basically fed pixels in the baby bottle.

Was it one of those NES mockups that look more like SNES? Nope, it was a simple voxel art treasure chest to show how marching-cubes rendering can smooth out voxel models to look like low-poly assets.
16x16x16 Marching-cubes rendered voxel art model of a treasure chest. The rendering smooths out the corners and edges into 45 deg bevels, giving it a low-poly like lookVoxel art of the same treasure chest, but rendered with the typical cubic shape, with lots of edges and corners on diagonal surfaces.

Hey pixelheads, thanks for all the follows (above 1K!) and welcome to a place of bluer skies. Let's build it ourselves, step by step. I am bringing over all my #NES #pixelart tilesets and mockups, and here is a WIP one fitting the theme, all done with the amazing NAW tool by @nesrocks.bsky.social
Initial stages of a NES pixelart mockup scene and tileset of warm colored castle bricks on the foreground, with a purplish and crumbling wall on the background, fading into a Blue Sky with white clouds.A more advanced stage of the same work-in-progress NES pixelart mockup scene and tileset, now with highlighted and even warmer bricks on the foreground, new shaded and interior background areas, and added ladders, barrels, crates and skull-shaped slime monster sprites of varied colorsAdvanced state featuring newer pipes, chains and brakable brick tiles, the setup now changed to drop the previous dedicated "interior background" palette in favor of using it for the pipes. The more detailed 16x8 color grid mode (avaliable in more advanced hardware mappers) is used to color elements higher or shorter than 8px, such as doors, bridges and a fake cloud overlay effect.

Twitter might come back anytime but I wont leave bluesky at all, and will bring all my #Pixelart and #NESdev stuff over here. Here is another isometric setup that pushes the limits of the common 16x16 color grid and uses the #NES NTSC dither artifacts for an interesting sand effect :)

Isometric #pixelart scene in authentic #NES graphics. This was one of my first attempts to make it look beyond typical NES graphics while keeping it within the limitations. Everything here works with the common 16x16 color attribute grid, supported by all cartridges.

A Western themed #pixelart scene and #tileset in authentic #NES graphics, the first I did with NAW editor (nesrocks.itch.io/naw by the amazing Mario @nesrocks on Twitter) showcasing the fully working sprites feature (cacti). This can be readily exported as ROM.

I'll be posting the #pixelart I had on my media tab :) This is a comparison between my first #NES piece (common 16x16 attribute color grid) and the last #tileset update which works with advanced NES mappers (MMC5/Rainbow, 8x8 grid):

I make actually voxel-based models which are then smoothed and resolve into lowpoly assets, if that counts 😅

Hey Pixelheads! I am Vinik and I make pixelart, voxelart and lowpoly assets and color palettes! Also very into authentic art for NES, Gameboy and other beloved systems. Glad to join you all in Bluesky!
