Also, 100 percent a conversation that would happen. I think this isn't the greatest example, because below the yellow line is doing more than just being a punchline.

Ehhhhhhhhh. I think the repetition here works better because it solidifies characterization of the Barbarian as a well-meaning meatball with a single braincell bouncing around his mind like a Sony DVD logo screensaver.

Reader: "I was going through a rough patch, but I swear to you, that credit union joke saved my marriage!" Writer: wtf (Anyway, I do enjoy a good bad joke, so while it wouldn't keep me coming back on its own, it adds to the ✨atmosphere✨)

And this is why even when I get WIPs, I will make sure to tell the artist how exciting seeing the WIP is, etc., before listing any changes. Gotta make sure the artist doesn't feel like I'm *only* nitpicking their work for me, lmao~

I also want to add to anyone that may say ¨I want my art to be escapism¨ if you need to read a book, watch a movie, or play a game to escape real life, there might be something wrong with society and we should change it instead of escaping ?

Anyway, I could write a whole essay about this (or even a series of essays about this) but yes: sci-fi and fantasy have been shaped by colonialism, and it goes deeper than representation and/or plot-level conflicts.

020

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 12/10/2026

(to be fair, commercial stuff isn't supposed to redefine that kind of stuff, but it is sad that it feels a lot like most literary fantasy also isn't that interested in re-examining what is and what might not be part of the deep-rooted colonialist worldview and imagines that we could truly be free.)

110

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 12/10/2026

Even a lot of "anti-colonialist" fantasy (at least, the commercial stuff) still is built off of and feeds into a system of tropes, worldbuilding, and "g e n r e c o n v e n t i o n s" that reinforces this stuff, bc it is deeper than just "who is this story about, and who are they fighting?"

110

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 12/10/2026

Oh yeah. The tropes born out of white colonization is still alive and well in 2026. I still say that there are few, if any, fundamentally decolonized fantasy stories here in the US/Europe/etc.

A ref sheet of an anthropomorphic coyote girl named Claire Hawthorne. She is a grey-and-light-tan/brown coyote with shoulder-length white hair and pale gold-yellow eyes. She is wearing a casual outfit consisting of light purple skating shoes, thigh-high cotton socks, a pair of short jean shorts, and a white T-shirt crop-top. Additionally, she has black nail polish, a black pentagram pendant necklace, thin gold bangles around her wrists, and large round thin-framed glasses.

Btw, this applies far outside queer allyship, too. Age, gender, race, disability status, etc. allyship is a way of being, not a checklist to perform to feel and look like a good person. I'm sure people's hearts are in the right place, but idk, I feel like more work needs to be done.

020

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

I dunno. Again, I largely am biased because I fundamentally don't see posting online as praxis, so idk. Anyway, back to your regularly-scheduled horny drgn programming.

000

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

Idk, I feel like far too many people think allyship is a checklist of affirmations and such when it's like... A thing you do, that alters how you look at the world and act accordingly. I'm not trying to harsh people's mellow or anything, but idk, I feel like it's less than the bare minimum.

100

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

Like idk, call me cynical and distrusting or whatever, but reading those posts on here and other spots always makes me feel like "okay, so where's the posts where you call a trans person you disagree with "they/them" instead of their actual pronouns?"

100

Freyja Vindursdóttir @vindursdottir.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

So not to turn my horny-drgn account into a political megaphone or anything, but like, idk man. I kinda think that if allies want to feel like allies, posting platitudes of allyship online has got to be the least effective method.
