Crikey. Antinori practically introduced me to Italian red wines. And then I never looked back. Now I’m looking back. 😢 Thieves steal 30,000 bottles of wine worth €5m in Italy, reports say www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Down Under, wine gets complicated. Shiraz isn’t really from Shiraz, Busby brought half of Europe in a suitcase and the Aussies have been bending the rules ever since. Severn cracking Ozzie wines, plus mon incroyable illustration! No sunscreen required. ♥️🇦🇺🦘🍾🍷

Blackbook’s 2018 Nightjar: old Essex Pinot Noir with the lights turned down way low. Cherry, forest floor, spice and autumnal forest floor seduction. Eight years squirrelled away in my cellar have done unspeakably good things to this bottle. Pour slowly. Prepare to swoon. Oof. 🫦

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2018, Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge. Berene Sauls’ beautifully evolved Pinot with haunting delicacy: wild strawberry, sour red cherry & rose petals with forest floor & gentle spice. Silky, savoury & wonderfully persistent. South African Pinot at its most ethereal. Get in! ♥️🇿🇦🍷

I would argue that Postecoglou was the one that actually achieved something - against odds that would have unacceptable to other managers. Poch's main failing was a reluctance to take anything other than the PL or CL seriously. Still, it would have been nice if either had been backed properly.

‘Drinking well now’ is not the whole story, but it’s a great start. Mature Tempranillo brings red fruit, cedar, tobacco and gentle spice. The tannins have mellowed beautifully. Like many of us of a certain age: less vigour, more charm.

Saffer Syrah - punchy, spicy and obviously alcoholic at 14% - the booze pronounced on the nose and at the back of the throat 😕 - however stood up well to an aged, very juicy bacon, cheeseburger at Magnum in Edinburgh. A really lovely, historic resto off the main crazy drag of the Fringe.

A ‘Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds’ Grenache Blanc from the mighty Ridge. If you can get hold of a bottle of this in UK, enjoy but maybe in a few years time when #BinHead can more so control space/time. Super youthful but bit of a big old banger. Mensch. Stand aside Slow Cooked Spiced Duck Legs! 🦆

When in London, Greek temperatures call for Greek wines - particularly on the epic eclipse of the sun evening. I tend to think of Liatiko as a cheeky kid brother of Xinomavro. This one’s an absolute banger and superb value for money - first simply squirrel it away in the cellar for a year or two.💋

This is the late, great Roy Martin’s 2016 Single Estate Chardonnay from ‘Côte de Crouch’. 10 years young and only just hitting its stride. Lean, fresh, gloriously fruity and still fizzing with energy. English Chardonnay? Ready to rumble. 💋👍🏼

Damn this is such good juice! Who says England, nay Norfolk, cannot make age worthy Pinot Noirs? Lots of life left in this precoce. Just entering its tertiary phase. Baked cherry, smoke ham hock and a smidge of liquorice. In a wine, it’s sublime.

Essex Chardonnay. Cambridge windmill. Burgundy soul. Gutter & Stars’ Daylight Upon Magic 2020 somehow turns an unlikely postcode into something decidedly Meursault-esque. Hazelnut, buttered brioche and ripe orchard fruit glide over a seam of taut acidity. Yummy yummy!

Finally some sensible analysis on a bit of a shit film. Honestly, it’s like the establishment film/wine critics who are concerned if they don’t play along with the latest blockbuster release then they won’t be invited to the next release of a film/vintage. Sad.😟 www.theguardian.com/music/2026/j...

I thought Nolan’s Odyssey was an epic bore. If you want Greek myths brought to life, try the thrill of opera!
Composers from Purcell to Birtwistle have created passionate dramas inspired by ancient Greek stories – and none of them require you to sit through three hours of solemn spectacle without an interval

Apparently some wines whisper? This very youthful Xinomavro quietly shouts. Black forest cherries, a teasing lick of liquorice, savoury complexity and enough character to fill a Greek amphitheatre but without the tragic last act. The whole shebang in a bottle. Bravo Apostolos Thymiopoulos. ♥️🇬🇷🍷

Praise be to The Wine Society for providing a perfectly adequate Greek rosé for a ‘school night’. Thems were the days. Ngl the wine has a touch of the boiled fruit pastels about it but in a semi-decent kind of way. Dry, refreshing and rather calming after that crazy Argentina v Morocco game.

This RdD arrives like a Spanish bulldozer driven by a slightly tiddly Mariano Garcìa - loud, confident & unconcerned with his usual subtlety. 😉 Brimming with balanced acidity, dark fruits, spice & slight oak, it grabs this lamb shank by the scruff of the neck & refuses to let go. Yumminess.👍🏼 ♥️🇪🇸🍷

Albariño: vino with more passports than a secret agent. In 🇪🇸 Galicia it kisses the Atlantic, in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Kent it has an acidic accent & in 🇺🇾 Uruguay it dances to a different beat. Crisp, zesty, saline, tropical or floral - few grapes adapt so brilliantly while keeping their Albariño soul. ¡Gracias! ♥️🍋🍏🗿💎

A v good indeed Saffer Sauv Blanc reminded me that prejudice is no substitute for tasting. Comando G’s Rozas 1er Vino de Paraje 2019 brought the grace and poise of Sierra de Gredos. And then some. Finally, Roger Groult’s 12 year old Calvados Pays d’Auge provided a fabulous finale.

Deep, dark and seductive, this is liquid velvet. Black cherry, blackberry, wild mountain herbs, cedar and a whisper of woodsmoke. Richly poised, it delivers ripe fruit, savoury spice and earthy complexity to a long, caressing finish. Ooer! Beside tender slow-roasted lamb, it was irresistible. 🇫🇷🍷🐑
