Gale Brewer is awesome for having enabled these efforts (though I know we have many more folks to thank, e.g. @noneck.org). We’re in a better spot transparency-wise because of them. Tish James and Bill de Blasio also show up at these hearings, which is fun. 16-17 years ago!!

I have access to NYC council hearing recordings for NYC’s purchase of Legistar from Granicus from 2008, and on our Open Data laws from 2009. These were pre-Legistar. I’ll be doing a history feature in April some time. These are incredible in so many ways. Subscribe at citymeetings.nyc.

It's not just limited to this podcast. People post their advocacy on social media all the time. It amplifies what they do. They can show how they showed up for their 3 minutes at a hearing, or share the culmination of their efforts -- like the successful passage of a piece legislation.

I think Today in Gay wins the award for first citymeetings.nyc mention in a podcast, mentioning the committee vote to designate January 31 as Cecilia Gentili Day. I love to see it. One of the underrated things about actually-transparent meetings is that they amplify real, on-the-ground advocacy.
