Ms. Dolly Parton Started this on 24/08/2026 Took some time to get her done. I'll never feel like I did her justice, but I know she was the kind of person who wouldn't want anyone to not appreciate the beauty of their work. #painting #queerartist

Fauvism-adjacent gouache painting of Dolly Parton. The reference image used was a 1989 Steel Magnolias promotional glamour portrait of Dolly Parton in which she is posing in front of a mirror and showing off a large, double-teardrop rhinestine earring. She is wearing a high-necked white lace collar and matching sleeves. The photo is focused on her reflection, to the left of the frame view from behind of her voluminous hair is taking up about ⅙ of the frame.

I *know* I didn't kill Dolly Parton by starting this on the 24, but the OCD gremlin is loud and making me feel guilty about the base sketch not being *perfect* (to make up for her being dead). So, I think I'm gonna put her aside for now and maybe do something else until the OCD gremlin shuts up.

Messy pencil sketch of the previous promotional photo. It is in a sketchbook to be able to refine it before transferring a basic and cleaner line work to the heavier paper on which the portrait will eventually be painted.

The same messy sketch as before after a few adjustment. The majority of the details and fine stuff will be left to when it is being replicated on a page better suited for painting.
The flatness of the sketch serves as a reminder to trust the process, as the paint is what will add the illusion of dimension through light and shadow. (Ideally)
