Wisteria tree at Ashikaga Flower Park, Japan. Photography by KotHat on photohito

Cascading like an ethereal, violet-tinted waterfall from an unseen sky, a curtain of glowing wisteria (fuji) blossoms overhead in a breathtaking nocturnal spectacle. At the base, a thick, ancient trunk twists with muscular grace, its weathered, spiral-grained wood anchoring a vast canopy-like arbor from which countless long, delicate racemes hang in dense, weeping clusters. Soft upward illumination transforms the mass of pale purple and magenta flowers into a luminous, suspended ocean of petals, casting a soft glow onto the petal-strewn earth below. The photograph evokes a dreamy, multi-sensory atmosphere: the sweet, honeyed perfume of evening blossoms heavy in the cool spring night, the faint, rustling whisper of racemes swaying in a gentle breeze, the soft hum of nocturnal garden air, and the quiet, awe-struck hush of standing beneath a ceiling of living light. Captured at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture, this magnificent specimen exemplifies the centuries-old Japanese tradition of cultivating grand wisteria arbors (fuji-dana). Cherished since the Heian period as a symbol of nobility, longevity, and refined elegance, wisteria appears throughout classical waka poetry, aristocratic clan crests (kamon), and iconic theater performances such as the kabuki dance Fujimusume ("The Wisteria Maiden"). Preserving a tree of this monumental scale—with branches extending across hundreds of square meters supported by meticulously engineered timber trellises—represents a supreme testament to horticultural monozukuri (artisanal mastery and reverence for living craft). Through generations of dedicated pruning, binding, and care, Japanese arborists have elevated landscape architecture into a living, intergenerational fine art.

Stuffed shells for dinner. It’s finally cool enough to fire up the oven. Small dice mozzarella, provolone, Asiago used through and as a topping. I prefer that instead of shredded as it provides the ‘pull’ of melted cheese. Shredded cheese just disappears.

Can still hear the sound that device made. Drop the blade fast, no hesitation allowed. Learning? Measure twice, cut once. One was still on the file cabinets by my desk when I retired in ‘24. It’s probably still there. B’cuz who’s gonna bring the HooDoo down on themselves throwing away a guillotine?

The garden is officially done. There have been signs. The heat went on in the house last night. The temperature will drop to 40f overnight. The tender plants have been brought in. What is left of the basil and some cuttings to root, fingers crossed.

October, the shepherds gather the sheep to bring them back to the valley before the first snows in Switzerland 🇨🇭 It’s often a festive event for the villages they pass through. That’s the case here, where the sheep are "decorated" with a colorful paper flowers 🌺

Sometimes, what matters most is not the light or the dark, but the in-between moment.

PHOTO by James Wheeler. A vivid sunset ignites the sky with streaks of lavender, coral, and gold, casting their hues across a blanket of scattered clouds. Below, a perfectly still lake mirrors the dramatic canvas above, creating a seamless reflection of color and light. A narrow strip of land with silhouetted trees and distant mountains separates sky from water, anchoring the surreal scene in quiet solitude.

Five years ago, when a Seattle burger chain raised employee wages & benefits the Reicht wing lost their minds, screaming the result would be $20 burgers & the company would end in bankruptcy. Today, the chain is even more popular than ever. Never let them try to tell you a living wage can’t work.

I love this kind of thing. All I can think of is the people who designed & built, this machine. Those who made the materials it was made out of. The people who moved it, shaped it, tested it. And why is the housing wider than the grinder, maybe it’s just an optical illusion.
