Specifically though, we're using Voice Drive to add the grit to it but the secret sauce is using Fruity Peak Controller to nab the level of the vocals and patcher to feed that into the Effect Level of Voice Drive. This way we can tune it so it only engages on the loud parts and consonants stay clear

I'm good with crunchy. There is an element to FM Bass and other low bitrate sounds that has a crispy / crunchy high end that I really enjoy trying to emulate in some areas of my production.

Fun fact, I'm kind of terrible at animating in 2D so for the little 2D animated bit in the BIRDBRAIN cover I just made it in blender and traced the frames in procreate and the scene looks like this. (I had to shrink a bunch of tetos body to not stick through the transparency)

The compression on everything is simple presets from 20 year old plugins. Maybe it is not so much bad art as it is an an experiment in what I perceive to be flawed art with the goal of hopefully determining if the core idea is solid enough to shine through the flaws. An approximation of naive art?

Well, the guitar is not that in tune. The vocals have no tuning besides the base notes. The drum soundfont is insanely compressed from the get go so I can't alter the sound of it much. The "amp" is just an imitation Boss DS1 with some EQ to make it not sound crazy shrill. The bass is a stock FL VST.
