My thoughts on playing TTRPGs after 3 years. I use Pathfinder 2e terms here, but this applies for all systems. #ttrpg #writing

A foe is not just a statblock. That enemy in front of you wielding a blade, claws or laser pistol has a past and may not have a future after this fight is over. There is meaning to their existence, and you can always bring them down to surrender just as much as decapitating them. They were doing something before the fight, and if they survive, they will do more things after. Perhaps they threatened you. Perhaps they kidnapped the party mascot. Perhaps they even monologued about how the world should be destroyed in a ball of fire and ash.

Something led them here. Just as much as it led you.

Likewise, an encounter is not just a flat space with statblocks on either side. There are stairs to vantage points. Platforms within reach. Pits to certain death. Chandeliers to break down. Explosive barrels waiting to go off. Sewage you definitely don't want to step in.

And that's even assuming its a normal combat encounter or even one at all. What is rustling in the bushes in dark of night? Why, a talking mushroom lost from home. Lead them home and get directions to the nearest town as a reward. What is behind that closed door in the dungeon? A hostage and a gunman waiting to put a bullet in their head; roll initiative and pray you can react in time.

You have an infinite array of potential scenarios to make encounters more interesting as a GM and a player (you're allowed to ask if there's stuff in the room!)

The floor also is not always the same. On a ship in the middle of a storm? Now the floor is diagonal or the ship is capsizing. Reflex saves to Arrest a Fall, and better have some good parkour or get real creative with spells. Hope you can swim. On a mountainside? The cliffs might be unstable. Nobody cast Thunderclap or everybody will have a very bad time at the bottom of the ravine (unless they can Arrest a Fall, that is!).

The world is 3D. Going up or down is a valid direction and sometimes the best possible choice... or the only choice.

The image is proven to be AI generated, and features a man dressed as Spiderman punching a fascist wearing army fatigues in the face beneath a white cross in the middle of a crowd of protestors. Text over the costumed figure's arm reads "the ole razzle dazzle" and text over the fascist reads "em".

Notably, some of the proof of this image being AI has been doctored. The symbol on the costume has been altered to show the correct number of legs (explained in next image). However, a cellphone visible in the image still shows a badly garbled version of events indicative of AI generation.

The most emotional moment was the end of the first campaign me and my brother ever ran. It was a Back to the Future campaign run in #pathfinder2e that was a precursor to #frontierofman on the @grassfinder.bsky.social channel. Details in the image and alt text.

We were co-GMs, and we gave one of our players, who's character had lost their memories and became a skeleton wracked with a sense of guilt he did not understand, a choice:

slowly forget everything and become a human again with a family who loves him...

...or...

...remember, and stay with his new friends as a skeleton.

This campaign had been running for quite some time. At least 2 and half to 3 years by my recollection. He had forged genuine relationships with the other characters, and we laughed, cried and had epic moments multiple times over the sessions.

His player cried for 2 hours while struggling to make the decision. We were all on the verge of crying or outright crying. But in the end, he chose to forget. And in doing so, changed the entire course of the follow up campaign, Frontier of Man, by erasing a key villain from the timeline, who was created in the same ritual as his character.

She's aroace, and if she had her way she'd be in her workshop all day making DriftTube videos. This actually got her into severe danger when she was 16 and due to be married to David Breech.

This model was made with Hero Forge.

Sarah Brink. A human woman of around 25 years of age. She has white skin, blue eyes and light brown hair. She's loaded with all sorts of technology and supplies, and carries a blast rifle almost as tall as she is. Her clothing is comprised of brown leather space scavenger fare.

A golden bordered TTRPG token that's a photo of a top down view of a Giant Leopard Moth (Hypercompe scribonia) (photo from the US Fish and Wildlife Service). The moth is a rather large fellow, with a base white fuzz on their wings and body dotted with a black leopard print design. The token represents Greeg Numbigan, the big bad evil guy of my Great Paw campaign, though you couldn't really tell from the photo, as they're just such a cute little fellow.
