These people seem to think that the problem in the graphic novel industry is “not enough content” when already a huge portion of published novels by humans never get a readership 🤷‍♀️

There has been a great effort over many years to distance AI Safety discussion and policy from its origins and intellectual center, because its center is a sex cult started by a fan fiction author. If you want to be taken seriously you have to hide that.

I'm looking for this old political cartoon of a then vs. now two panel comic of a family around a piano singing and then the second panel is everyone listening passively to a record. Does anyone know who made it or where I can find it?

The best compliment I get about my books is that they make people cry. I can’t imagine shying away from the truth of emotion as an author or a reader.

A key point in Fahrenheit 451 is that books were banned because they made people depressed and uncomfortable. The novel's protagonist, Montag, is taken into custody after he reads a poem that makes a woman cry because she realizes the emptiness of her life.
[quoting a tweet from isabelunraveled in which she rails against depressing books that get branded as “great writing”]

Super-sleuth Barbara Perez Marquez scopes out scams - Sep 9th! Barbara brings a bevy of scam samples for review so you can learn the tell-tale signs to avoid identity scammer tricks and traps. Art by @ghostlysleuth.bsky.social cartoonist.coop/calendar/
A promotional graphic for a talk on Scams; Inkling (an inkwell) has just been scammed and is panicking at this computer. Nibford (a dip pen) comforts them as various results of being scammed show above them in bubbles: one contains a mysterious person donning a mask of Inkling's face, signifying identity theft; one contains a dollar bill with wings flying off, signifying a loss of money; one contains malicious hands reaching toward a Social Security card, signifying the risk of important personal documents; and the last contains a group of eyes watching Inkling, signifying a general loss of privacy. Title text says: "Cartoonist Co-op presents...Scams & You: Recent Scams and (hopefully) How to Avoid Them". Subtitle text reads: "September 9; 10 AM PT, 1 PM ET, 5 PM GMT, 3 AM AEST (next day)".

So there's a mix of things going on. I use pen and watercolor (signos for the sketches because they are waterproof) For the watercolors I have a very tiny palette and a water pen so it keeps it all pretty tidy! The other medium is acrylic markers!

It really pisses me off how many small businesses, food trucks, etc, get defensive around their AI posters and menus, saying they can't afford graphic designers or whatever. But where was this problem 2 years ago? It takes more time than just using a photo and writing a caption with marker pen?

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

My thoughts on Image publishing a new Warren Ellis book.
I have spent the day re-reading the entirety of SoManyOfUs.com, including every testimonial. I’ve also re-read dozens of documents and communications from the transformative justice action SMOU-TJ and Warren Ellis started. I wanted to remember the hope I held at that time. I also wanted to see if I could approach this moment with gratitude instead of anger.
To believe in transformative justice is to believe people capable of change. But, as our mediator said during the process, “transformation is heartbreak.” It is crushing and painful, but it is also our right as human beings. I haven’t spoken to Warren Ellis in over 6 years. I don’t know who he is now. I don’t know how he’s changed, but I’m sure he has. I know Warren read all of SoManyOfUs.com and I can’t imagine an outcome where doing so doesn’t change you. But, as Kai Cheng Thom says, “Change is inevitable, growth is optional.” I was often sad that Warren, when confronted with the consequences of his actions, didn’t react in the way I expected him to. But I am grateful it led to me untangling 15 years of complicated feelings and hurtful actions.
I’m grateful that I believe we can change and hold ourselves accountable in this world. But, quoting our mediator again, “being called to accountability feels like being reminded that your shit stinks. and coming clean is hard to do.” It can feel impossible to look in the mirror and confront the worst version of ourselves. Without having the necessary support systems in place to make it possible, I don’t blame or fault anyone for not being able to do it.
We all tried our best. When our attempt at a community accountability action failed, I was disappointed, but grateful that we tried. And grateful to know that Warren had tried, too.
I currently work as an editor in comics, with books I work on being published by Image. I love comics. I love the comics community and how we all keep making them despite it being so hard, with no financial security, and no safety nets. I see groups within the community doing so much good and fighting hard to make the industry more sustainable and safer for everyone involved.
But there is no set process for anyone in the comics community to account for our actions and change our behaviour after harm or abuse has happened. This has led many people to be forced out of the industry – victims, perpetrators, and witnesses. My heart hurts for all the people who were bullied, ostracized, shunned, or threatened out of this community, particularly those I spoke to back in June and July of 2020, impacted by Warren’s actions. I hope one day this changes.
I’m grateful to everyone who was wondered if Warren has “made amends to the satisfaction of all involved.” It shows me solidarity and care are widespread within comics. I wouldn’t say I’m satisfied, but I also would say I am no longer personally invested in Warren’s transformation.
I am personally invested in the books I work on that come out with Image, and I really hope you don’t take any disappointment you feel in Image’s actions out on the creators whose work they publish. Seeing people boycotting Image comics feels a cruel joke when that directly affects my livelihood and that of the people who respect and support me. But I get it – this seems like a financial decision from Image, so respond in a financial fashion. I hope we can all keep ourselves open to change in the future.
My resolve to expand my capacity to hope for change – after a night of anger and crying and shouting – is renewed. Thanks for hearing me out and for reading all of this.
