I had to laugh at that. “Okay, maybe you’re onto something.”

“You think your weirdness is thing of shame. But maybe is filter. Like… radiation shielding. Repels wrong people. And what is left? That is your pack.” She smiled at me. “That is us. Look at me. To rest of world, I am ‘conspiracy theorist.’ To Christoph, ‘divergent thinker.’ Morgan is rebel who throws up on shoes. Christoph says she is ‘creative problem-solver.’”

“What about me?” I asked. “Because most of the time, I feel like I’m just…a lot.”

Katya hopped down from the counter and slid into the booth across from me. “You? You are thinker.”

“We all are. You don’t need me for that.”

“No, you are different. You see little details. Feel them. Important things, too small for rest of us. Sometimes I am thinking you can see single atom. This is why Panzer is choosing you. You sniff things out, like dog nose.”

Excerpt two: Christoph was sitting back on his heels in defeat, face and hands smudged with blood that wasn’t his.

The look he gave me when I returned wasn’t even angry at first. Just hollow. Disbelieving. Disappointed.

“She was awake,” he forced through gritted teeth. “Still talking. Still fighting. Still begging.” I silently dropped the blood bags on the pavement beside him like they still mattered. He stared at them, then at me.

“You walked,” he said. “You fucking walked.” He slowly rose to his feet, looking down at me in a way I didn’t even know he was capable of. “Tell me I am wrong. Please. Tell me you ran and something got in the way. Tell me you did everything you could.”

I looked him straight in the eyes, my fists clenched defiantly at my side.

“She would have done the same for me.”

I go into pitch events with zero expectations. There’s a lot of authors all vying for attention, and if your project defies easy categorization, it can be hard to make your case in this format. Personally, I consider it a success if I come away with a new mutual who also moved from STEM to writing.

Hot take: there is a dark side to academia, but “dark academia” as a genre is largely uninterested in it. Give me grad students being abused by advisors. Intellectuals caught in purges. Researchers w/ impossible ethical dilemmas. Merely being set in a poorly-lit school does not make something DA.

I recently moved back to my hometown because my 🇦🇺 roomies no longer felt safe here and left. They couldn’t bring their two noodle dogs along, so they came w/ me. I’ve successfully Pavloved them.
