8:07 is heaven. I met him when I was a college student. I was lucky enough to be in one of his master classes. He was kind and imaginative and unforgettable. Chain smoking at piano! I hope he quit. youtu.be/Bdzbhp0nm7w?...

I think I'd pay premium for verified home chefs to make food on demand according to dietary restrictions. I don't have all the ingredients for vegan kimchi stew at 4AM, so I have to eat ramen. Someone told me yesterday that store bought soups are just as good as home cooked ones...

I know slow practicing is good for me. I’m finding all sorts of weaknesses because I’m paying attention to one hand while other hand part is playing in unmuted tracks. But it’s hard and boring. Artist at masterclass says he loves practicing like this. It’s broccoli. Wax on wax off.

What do you think good education is? What do you think young people should learn. Basic survival skills, ppl skills and points of view? Last is hard for some ppl but it’s important for so many reasons. They also need to be able to find good community of people. Also, how do u contribute towards one?

I finished Natsuo Kirino’s book “Swallows” and couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s about a 29 year old temp worker in Japan who decides to become a surrogate mother out of financial necessity. I wrote a review.

I recorded about half of the fugue with voices apart in different tracks with Logic Pro. I realized that the errors during performance always occur when third voice comes in. So I mute the other two voices and play the new voice. I am also practicing parts alone very slowly

We started a protocol for my older non verbal son about a month ago and this morning he asked for coffee and sand drank it like ahjussi and during lunch, wanted to watch kdrama with me narrating. He kept signing more when I asked him if he was done. Too early to call but this is new and amazing

There's something special about in person meetings with people who have common interest. I know a lot of meetings have moved online and it's just not the same. If you have some kind of connection (not necessarily to level of friendship), you are more likely to continue and to care.

I played in guest masterclass. Wasn’t signed up but volunteered when someone dropped. I fumbled fugue section but got really amazing comments. He even said “you are so good” which was so encouraging. he said fugue - practice very slowly savoring lines horizontally and vertically with finger legato

i am grateful for the benefits of AI but what i dont enjoy is how some orgs are using it. Seems like they do like a sweep of low effort work per client producing a lot of low quality data for someone to examine at some point. Lots of activity without follow through on single thread.

In the piano class, the instructor asked, didn’t Glenn Gould use an ornament here and I said I think it’s this and whipped one out if what seemed like recent memory. At home, I couldn’t find it in that recording but in 1989 recording by another pianist - a version I heard live that year!

I made a nice timeline of US history with Astra. Definitely is not a sub for a good course or a teacher, but it's a good overview. It's nice to see events in sequence so student can look up the events. I think it makes really nice UI but it doesn't go very deep by default.

I played in piano class today. It went pretty well although far from perfect. I had someone record it for review. The instructor had really helpful things to say. Always for me, throwing out ego leads to better learning and improvement. I am lamenting not having a Steinway to control depth better.

I'm wondering if cowork is a good way to organize medical services, bills, payments. It can get a bit overwhelming with bills I get months later after insurance. How do you organize these bills that keep coming, balances you are not sure about from months ago, just coming at you in intervals?

I found out something interesting. Practicing my piece at a slightly faster tempo than I intend to play was a good proxy for being a bit nervous and feeling like I don't have that default muscle memory. It exposes insecurity on some fingerings that I just compensate for at a slower tempo.

I only learned today that you can extract music from YouTube video without paid sub. Someone wrote a really cool free web app that allowed me to transpose a piece, slow it down and save all locally. I was able to transpose up harpsichord tuned half step lower.

In the weekly piano class we are taking, the instructor projects the sheet music up on a white screen while the performers are playing. I really love this. You see how amazing these pieces are as well as hearing. The guest teacher had lived in Russia for 20+ years and built harpsichords!

This is the start of the speech about reading I'm doing for the speech club tomorrow. Mostly subjective experience. Still tinkering. My husband said "pretty good" - that's what he says when it's meh - bad. so I have to work on it more.
I spent decades believing I was a bad reader. Tonight I want to tell you how I found out that conclusion was wrong — because some of you may be carrying a wrong one too.
When I was a girl in Korea, my mother bought me a set of translated classics. I can still see them — white hardcovers, gold titles: Daddy-Long-Legs. The Count of Monte Cristo. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
This was before the internet, before regular children’s television programs in Korea . I loved living as other people in different worlds.
Then I immigrated to America, and reading became labor. I worked incredibly hard to get into honors English, but I remember the feeling after silent reading — eyes down, hoping I wouldn’t get called on.
I read slowly. Details escaped me. I earned my grades through sheer willpower, and I reached the conclusion: I’m just not a strong reader.
I carried that belief for decades. It led me toward music and computer science, and away from anything with too many language heavy pages.
In college, I was a piano performance major. A complete piano nerd. My ear was good enough that my theory professor transposed the exams into different keys because he said I had an unfair advantage.
But everyone had to take general education classes. And I remember sitting with my accounting textbook — a misguided detour — reading the same page over and over, and nothing got in. Not one line. Words that made me yawn simply refused to enter my brain.
But hand me an interview with a concert pianist — how she practices, how she solves a passage, how she thinks about the music — and I remembered everything. Every detail, effortlessly, after one read.

I’ve been juggling a lot of things but I committed to doing a speech for a speech club Wednesday. I did manage an outline for it. It’s about reading and why we enjoy what we read and what happens when we lose interest or focus. Mostly personal experience but tgrowing in two studies.

our understanding of how our brains work seems to be so limited. I get hit with this when I read about various disorders. Things are discussed in large blocks and often contradict each other. Medical discussions seem to be at much smaller limited scale. Why do I care

9pm workout seemed like a good idea - felt disciplined after a long day -2am now. So I’ll talk about an animal. We used to have a lot of rabbits in our neighborhood but not so much anymore. I still see them once in a while - small fuzzy bunnies running into bushes. Where r the parents?

My heart breaks for Mr Arday. I had emailed him telling him that he’s an inspiration to young people who struggle. I think he still is for having pulled himself to levels above and beyond where he was. I hope we can teach young ppl to persevere, protect them from such cruelty I‘m seeing about this

My son is taking online history course with a former college professor and I love listening in. It’s so fun learning when u have nothing at stake. In addition to passion and deep expertise, he has a lot of empathy for students and historical figures alike. It makes me rethink a lot of things.

Moment of inflection to dramatic acceleration of learning can feel like the worst. It's because there is more insight and data about what is needed for improvement. It can feel overwhelming but it's just change from ignorance to insights. It's very important to keep motivation through this phase.

I’m trying to properly learn this piece. I’ve always played it but not really known it or synthesized it. if u can communicate simply, u understand. And things r made up of smaller blocks which u internalize and build bigger structures. Long way2 go from phone in pants to visuals, good explanations

Taking younger son to see The Odyssey. Thinking about the story at my age vs at age 17/18 is totally different. The idea of always choosing the more difficult journey home, hero's tale vs actual devastation are very moving to me. I have loved many of Nolan's movies, so I'm looking forward to it.

My first test of Opus 5 was asking how I would air fry korean mung bean cake. I love the taste but it is super hot here now and a bit hellish frying all the batter. Pretty good! It needs a more savory dipping sauce, since the taste of the ingredients doesn't get as infused as it does when pan-fried.
