Time to fly in with today's trivia.
Image includes 14 photos of brightly coloured moths or moths with intricate patterning, ranging from bright yellow to deep pink and emerald green, and others with speckles of red and more.

Today's trivia:
We often think of moths as dull brown or grey insects, but some could give butterflies serious competition. Moths come in extraordinary combinations of pink, green, orange, red, blue and even shimmering metallic colours. Some use their appearance for more than showing off. The Chinese character moth (Cilix glaucata) resembles a bird dropping when resting, helping it avoid hungry predators.

Consider too that moths aren't dull in the air either. Hawk moths have been recorded flying at around 19km per hour, with research suggesting they may be capable of considerably higher speeds in the wild.

There are many private schools in Australia that aren't in it for the money & even try to help parents who are struggling to pay for their kids. If there were no private schools, goodness me, taxpayers would STILL have to pay... this time for extra teachers, Principles, facilities, buildings etc.

Plato looks rather thoughtful in his cream-coloured tunic and dark blue cloak. Perhaps he's contemplating the consequences of remaining a bachelor in ancient Greece! 😄
An AI generated image of Plato, posing thoughtfully, his hand in his beard, wearing a dark blue cloak draped over a cream-coloured tunic.

Today's Trivia: Married by Order of the State

Marriage wasn't always considered a purely personal choice. In his work Laws, the Greek philosopher Plato proposed that any man still unmarried at the age of 35 should pay an annual fine and lose certain social privileges.

He also argued that a man should choose a wife based not simply on personal preference, but on what would best benefit the state.

Ancient Sparta went even further, discouraging unsuitable marriages because citizens were expected to produce healthy, strong children for the good of the community.

Nobody likes a visit from the taxman, but imagine opening your door to find THIS fellow accompanying him!
Photo of a Dobermann dog, mostly black with tan paws and other tan spots.

Friday's Fascinating Fact:
Nobody likes a visit from the taxman, but imagine opening your door to find THIS fellow accompanying him!

The Dobermann was developed in Germany in the late 1800s by tax collector and dog catcher Louis Dobermann.

He deliberately bred a fearless, protective dog to accompany him on his dangerous rounds collecting taxes.

That's why the Dobermann still carries the taxman's name today!

An apple a day...🍏
Image: Old black and white photo of Maria Ann Smith better known as Granny Smith.

Trivia:
Who was Granny Smith, and how did an apple come to be named after her? Maria Ann Smith was an English-born orchardist who settled with her family in what is now Eastwood, Sydney. In 1868, she discovered an unusual apple seedling growing on her property, apparently sprouted from discarded French crab apples. Maria recognised that the apple was worth cultivating, but died just two years later.

Local orchardists continued growing “Granny Smith's Seedling”, and by the 1890s it was being grown commercially.

Today, Granny Smith apples are grown around the world, and Eastwood even holds an annual festival in her honour!

Ai generated image of a button pin with the words "For kids' sake, think toy safety," and decorated with a Christmas wreath.

Trivia: Dumb Deeds
Titled: It's Safe to Say...

In 1974, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission commissioned 80,000 promotional buttons for its Christmas toy safety campaign bearing the slogan, "For kids' sake, think toy safety."

Before they could be distributed, however, the Commission's own safety tests found the buttons had sharp edges, detachable pins that children could swallow, and paint containing excessive amounts of lead. All 80,000 buttons were destroyed.

Sorry about Mr Darcy💔 I lost Larci, my 18 year old last year. His dementia got so bad that at night (mostly) he'd wander through the house calling out as if he felt lost. I called back reassuring him. He'd likely forgotten the new home we moved into 2.5 years before & didn't seem familiar to him.

Your move, Your Majesty.
Image of a wooden chessboard, with the universe as a backdrop.

Friday's Fascinating Fact: Astronomical!

The number of possible variations in a typical game of chess has been estimated at around 10¹²⁰, or 1 followed by 120 zeroes. By comparison, the observable universe is estimated to contain around 10⁸⁰ atoms, or 1 followed by 80 zeroes.

In other words, the possibilities on one little chessboard vastly outnumber all the atoms in the observable universe!

A milestone, & a peek at what's next. I've now completed 60 posters for my Golden Age of Squirrel Horror series: parodies of old horror & sci-fi movies. They'll be creeping out of the Mystery Woman Studios vault one at a time. Plenty yet to come. See what's been released so far: missterrywoman.com
A square vintage 1950s-style science-fiction horror movie poster titled “The Squirrel From 20,000 Fathoms”.

A gigantic brown squirrel with bared teeth towers over a city, crushing buildings in its enormous paws. The tagline reads: “Atomic testing awakened the ultimate menace.” The title dominates the lower part of the poster in large yellow lettering.

The fictional actors Heath Hedge, Scott Scurry, Mack Adamia and Chap Arral are credited at the bottom, along with “A Mystery Woman Studios Production”.

The artwork has the dramatic hand-painted appearance of a classic mid-century giant-monster movie poster.

Moulding a medical breakthrough... by accident.
Three images are shown including a photo of Alexander Fleming, mould in a petri dish and a 1950s inspired image of a father exiting a hospital with his wife and young son waiting.

The post begins: moulding a medical breakthrough... by accident.

Trivia: In 1928, Alexander Fleming returned from holiday to find that one of his dishes of bacteria had accidentally become contaminated with mould.

Instead of simply throwing it away, Fleming noticed something curious: the bacteria around the mould had disappeared. He investigated and discovered that the mould was producing a substance capable of killing certain bacteria. He called it penicillin.

Fleming had stumbled across something extraordinary, but penicillin wasn't yet a usable medicine. More than a decade later, Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and their colleagues at Oxford developed Fleming's discovery into an effective life-saving medicine, helping to usher in the age of antibiotics.

Photos of a male luna moth with very large antennae.

Trivia: Those spectacular feathery structures aren't decorative. They're the antennae of a male luna moth. The many tiny branches provide a large surface area covered with scent receptors, allowing the male to detect pheromones released by a female and follow the scent to find her.

Male luna moths have much larger, bushier antennae than females, making the difference between the sexes easy to see.

Does that mean desert snails find museums so boring they'd rather sleep?
Photo of a desert snail (sphincterochila zonata zonata) It has a rather plain white shell.

Trivia: You've probably heard of bears hibernating through winter, but some desert snails have an equally remarkable survival strategy. The desert snail Sphincterochila zonata zonata spends the hottest months aestivating, a form of dormancy similar to hibernation. It burrows as deep as 10cm into the ground, where it can survive temperatures approaching 50°C.

Amazingly, it's active for only about 18 to 26 days each year, emerging mainly after winter rain. Even more extraordinary, dormant individuals have been known to revive after spending up to six years in museum collections.
