Your move, Your Majesty.
Image of a wooden chessboard, with the universe as a backdrop.

Friday's Fascinating Fact: Astronomical!

The number of possible variations in a typical game of chess has been estimated at around 10¹²⁰, or 1 followed by 120 zeroes. By comparison, the observable universe is estimated to contain around 10⁸⁰ atoms, or 1 followed by 80 zeroes.

In other words, the possibilities on one little chessboard vastly outnumber all the atoms in the observable universe!

A milestone, & a peek at what's next. I've now completed 60 posters for my Golden Age of Squirrel Horror series: parodies of old horror & sci-fi movies. They'll be creeping out of the Mystery Woman Studios vault one at a time. Plenty yet to come. See what's been released so far: missterrywoman.com
A square vintage 1950s-style science-fiction horror movie poster titled “The Squirrel From 20,000 Fathoms”.

A gigantic brown squirrel with bared teeth towers over a city, crushing buildings in its enormous paws. The tagline reads: “Atomic testing awakened the ultimate menace.” The title dominates the lower part of the poster in large yellow lettering.

The fictional actors Heath Hedge, Scott Scurry, Mack Adamia and Chap Arral are credited at the bottom, along with “A Mystery Woman Studios Production”.

The artwork has the dramatic hand-painted appearance of a classic mid-century giant-monster movie poster.

Moulding a medical breakthrough... by accident.
Three images are shown including a photo of Alexander Fleming, mould in a petri dish and a 1950s inspired image of a father exiting a hospital with his wife and young son waiting.

The post begins: moulding a medical breakthrough... by accident.

Trivia: In 1928, Alexander Fleming returned from holiday to find that one of his dishes of bacteria had accidentally become contaminated with mould.

Instead of simply throwing it away, Fleming noticed something curious: the bacteria around the mould had disappeared. He investigated and discovered that the mould was producing a substance capable of killing certain bacteria. He called it penicillin.

Fleming had stumbled across something extraordinary, but penicillin wasn't yet a usable medicine. More than a decade later, Howard Florey, Ernst Chain and their colleagues at Oxford developed Fleming's discovery into an effective life-saving medicine, helping to usher in the age of antibiotics.

Those spectacular antennae aren't for better TV reception. They're tuned to romance.💘
Photos of a male luna moth with very large antennae.

Trivia: Those spectacular feathery structures aren't decorative. They're the antennae of a male luna moth. The many tiny branches provide a large surface area covered with scent receptors, allowing the male to detect pheromones released by a female and follow the scent to find her.

Male luna moths have much larger, bushier antennae than females, making the difference between the sexes easy to see.

Does that mean desert snails find museums so boring they'd rather sleep?
Photo of a desert snail (sphincterochila zonata zonata) It has a rather plain white shell.

Trivia: You've probably heard of bears hibernating through winter, but some desert snails have an equally remarkable survival strategy. The desert snail Sphincterochila zonata zonata spends the hottest months aestivating, a form of dormancy similar to hibernation. It burrows as deep as 10cm into the ground, where it can survive temperatures approaching 50°C.

Amazingly, it's active for only about 18 to 26 days each year, emerging mainly after winter rain. Even more extraordinary, dormant individuals have been known to revive after spending up to six years in museum collections.

DUCK!
AI generated illustration of the Australian musk duck.
Trivia: Ducks were never known for mimicking sounds until an unusual Australian musk duck made a world-first recording.

In 1987, Ripper, a musk duck hand-reared at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, was recorded imitating a slamming door and a human phrase, apparently learned from his carer, that sounded like “You bloody fool!”

Other musk ducks have reportedly copied a snorting pony, a keeper's cough and a squeaking turnstile.

Here's a new segment I'll be sharing occasionally, from dumb criminals and more.
Photo of Elyesa Bazna
Dumb deeds: During World War II, Elyesa Bazna worked as the valet to the British ambassador in Ankara, Turkey.

Secretly photographing highly classified documents, he sold them to German intelligence and was paid around £300,000 for his efforts, an enormous amount at the time.

After the war, Bazna tried to invest his fortune by entering the hotel business, only to discover that much of the money he'd been paid consisted of expertly forged banknotes.

In the desert, there's dessert... well, kind of.
Image of special honeypot ants.

Trivia: One of the most unusual insects of arid and semi-arid regions is the honeypot ant.

Certain worker ants, called repletes, are fed until their abdomens swell enormously, sometimes becoming as large as a pea or even a grape.

They then hang motionless inside the nest as living pantries. When the colony needs nourishment or water, the other ants gently stroke them with their antennae, prompting them to regurgitate the stored liquid to feed their nestmates.

A tasteful spot of trivia🦋
Photo of a common crow butterfly (Australia)

Trivia:
Butterflies do much of their tasting with their feet. Their feet contain thousands of tiny chemoreceptors that allow them to sample the chemicals on flowers and leaves. Females use these sensors to identify the right plants on which to lay their eggs, ensuring their caterpillars will have a suitable food source when they hatch.

They can also detect different chemicals, including sugars, salts and bitter compounds.

Do what you can can...
Image of a glass bottle by French confectioner Nicolas François Appert.
Today's trivia: The Can Can
While Napoleon Bonaparte is best remembered for his military campaigns, the need to feed France's armed forces also helped inspire an important advance in food preservation. In 1795, the French government offered a prize of 12,000 francs for a practical way to preserve food. French confectioner Nicolas François Appert eventually won the prize after developing a method of heating food in sealed glass containers.

Although food had previously been stored in metal containers, Appert's heat-preservation method laid the foundation for modern canning. Within a few years, the process was adapted to tin-plated iron cans, and by 1813 commercially canned food was being supplied to Britain's Royal Navy.

That's a bit of a stinker
On a Scale of 1 to 1,000: Imagine having a shower, putting on clean clothes and smelling strongly of rotting fish... and you don't work on a wharf. For people with trimethylaminuria (TMAU), also known as fish odour syndrome, this can be a daily reality.

TMAU prevents the body from properly breaking down a strong-smelling chemical called trimethylamine. Instead, it builds up and is released through the sweat, breath and urine, producing the characteristic fishy smell. The inherited form is caused by changes in the FMO3 gene.

Although people with TMAU are otherwise physically healthy, the condition can have a serious effect on their social and working lives. There is no cure, but dietary changes and other treatments can help reduce the odour.

It's Father's Day here in Australia, which reminded me of this father-and-son story. Across three generations, each built upon the work of his father, ultimately achieving something remarkable for its time. Happy Father's Day! #fathers #father'sday #thanks
In 1709, Abraham Darby I achieved a major break-through at Coalbrookdale, England, successfully using coke instead of increasingly scarce and expensive charcoal to smelt iron. Coke was cheaper and more plentiful, helping make possible the enormous expansion of iron production that followed.

His son, Abraham Darby II, built upon his father's work, greatly expanding the family's ironmaking industry.

His grandson, Abraham Darby III, then oversaw the construction of something unprecedented: the world's first major cast-iron bridge. Its great iron ribs were erected across the River Severn in 1779.

Together, the Darbys helped transform iron production and played an important part in Britain's Industrial Revolution. Their work demonstrated the possibilities of iron on an entirely new scale. Nearly 250 years later, the Iron Bridge is still standing.

~ Three generations, each building upon what his father had left him. ~

O say can you sea?
Christmas Trees Under the Sea?
These colourful little "Christmas trees" are actually part of a marine worm called the Christmas tree worm (Spirobranchus giganteus). Growing to around 3.8cm, the worm lives in a protective tube associated with coral. Its two colourful spiral "trees" are feather-like structures called radioles, which it uses both to breathe and to capture food from the water. If danger approaches, the worm can rapidly pull Christmas trees back inside its tube and shut the entrance behind them.

Fascinating fishes #trivia #fun #facts #fish #toadfish
Friday's Fascinating Fact from Miss Terry Woman:

Have you ever heard a fish make a sound? Surprisingly, quite a few of them do, sometimes to attract a mate, compete with other fish, defend themselves or warn of danger. Fish can produce sounds by rubbing or striking hard parts of their bodies together, or by using specialised muscles associated with the swim bladder.

Depending on the species, their underwater repertoire can include grunts, knocks, thumps, grinding and rasping noises, drumming and growls. Some toadfish can even produce a call that sounds rather like a boat whistle.

Apparently there are plenty of fish in the sea... and some of them are wolf-whistling at you.

Photo of a termite mound. Today's trivia:
Think your house is crowded? Some termite colonies contain millions of individuals, all living together in an extraordinarily organised society. A colony can contain workers, soldiers and more, with each group performing different jobs. Somewhere in the middle of all those millions of termites is a queen whose principal occupation is producing still more.

In some mound-building species, the enormous nest also helps regulate temperature and ventilation for the colony.
