the one time I've nearly been refused sale of an age restricted product was a stanley knife at wickes. except I was also buying brushes, rollers, tape, dust sheets and a ton of paint because most 15 year olds buying knives are starting a decorating business clearly

TransActual partnered with @scottishtrans.bsky.social and @transsolidarity.bsky.social to bring messages from this month’s Mass Lobby for Trans Equality to the Labour conference in Liverpool, and to ask the party: what now for our standing on LGBTQ+ rights?

Was really good to be out with these folk for a bit yesterday, and really emotive to see some of the messages from the mass lobby up on the big screen

There's clearly a bunch of other stuff going on here, which, again, not intending to get into, I'm just surprised at how much focus is as the community and particularly individual level.

Like maybe, just maybe, there is some bigger reason why the clinentele of a mask-required bar can't keep it afloat not just a selfish unwillingness to pay for things? And maybe the fact our social systems don't support doing grassroots social good as something profitable might be a wider issue?

On this covid-concious lesbian bar situation*, it's really disappointing that I've not seen anyone discussing the situation in structural terms. *I'm not nor do I intend to get into the weeds of this

I think my issue with this is much wider than GLP personally, and not sure how easy it would be to break away from how things are talked about more widely, but that doesn't make it less of an urgent issue (and I know you are on the sharp end of that)

Agree, I think the concept of legal discrimination (i.e. discrimination that is permitted under the law) vs illegal/unlawful discrimination could be useful here. I get that it might make explaining the legal stuff a little less easy but its got to be better than denying trans kids language right?

I agree there's not enough information to know how serious that is (or even really who/what's invovled). Potentially very but also potentially not.

Just watched a little dog end up up to her (very floppy) ears in mud and sand from jumping straight in the deepest part of some tide pools. Much to the dismay of her owners, who presumably just added 'bath time' onto their Sunday to do list.

This is how his hobbies are described (see image). He likes sailing and singing! You can say he likes sailing and singing! I'm quite sure most folk on my street don't know what 'classic wooden yacht racing' means nevermind what a Commodore is.
His other interests include classic wooden yacht racing and cruising (he is Vice Commodore of the British Classic Yacht Club) and choral singing (he is a trustee of the Sixteen Choir led by Harry Christophers, with whom he sang as an undergraduate choral scholar at Magdalen, Oxford).

It has a Flesch Reading Score of 40.3 (a scale used to measure how easy something is to read - this is low, meaning the piece of writing is difficult to read).

If you are an organisation that (at least ostensibly) serves the public, and your news articles are written at a university-level reading level, that says a lot about which bits of the public you really think you are for, and should be interested in your work.

Bittersweet milestones - our 2020 article "TERF Wars: An Introduction", published in @thesociologicalreview.org, just hit 600 citations on Google Scholar, and has over 100,000 views. I would love for it to become irrelevant. However, given the state of the world, I'm grateful it remains useful.

Trans people are brought up (blamed) in the very first paragraph of this seemingly unrelated article. Ableism and transhobia continue to go hand in hand.

Nah mate 8 minutes minimum connection time at Newcastle is having a laugh Petition to introduce a reduced-mobility-but-not-enough for-passenger-assistance connection time for the railways because some of these minimums are impossible if you remember lifts exist.

Are you global majority? Are you queer? Then get to this tomorrow. AUTONOMOUS ZONE At Granby Winter Garden, L8 2UW
Poster contains a depiction of an orange stage floor, behind it a red brick wall which seems to be hanging a trans symbol and lesbian Labrys, sandwiched between this is a microphone. The curtain to the left of the stage is depicted with a Roma flag and on the right the Progress flag. Text at the top says "Autonomous Zone, A Queer Global Majority open mic night" and at the bottom "Where? 04/09/2026. Friday, the 4th of September 5:30pm - 8pm. Where? Granby Winter Gardens L8 2UW. Wheelchair accessible, Gender neutral toilets". Art is subjective, in my subjective opinion this artwork is breathtaking and the artist did an incredible job

Absolutely, I appreciate it's a learned skill, but 'act as if everything you ever do could be presented in the worst light possible in the national press' is a learned skill a lot of local greens need to learn quick & most trans people already have

It's a great frame - I'm increasingly finding 'necessary but not sufficient' to be a really helpful way to explain the role of policy and legal work in social movements.

I probably could've got access to better treatment options for multiple of my conditions in my teens in the US, because my dad works for international corporation with good insurance options and could afford to pay the out-of-pocket max each year. But many of my friends would be dead or sicker.

Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
I think this follows for a lot of international/US vs UK healthcare comparisons tbh - an insuranced based system might get access to a better range of treatments for people with healthy support people, stable well paid employment, and good insurance, and destroys the health of many without those

Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
Look whether access to trans healthcare is easier or more difficult in the US vs UK is a complex question that often seems to vary by individual, but about the one thing we can say is the situation for trans people in the US is definitely not improved by having a private, insurance-based system?

Thinking about the trans woman whose mother went to the press in this Welsh Gender Service bullshit. Like it's horrific that this woman's healthcare and bodily autonomy have been disrupted like this because her mother feels entitled to exercise cobtrol over her body like this.

Definitely standard in some bits of the NHS yes. But I think probably usually from services that also aren't measuring the harm they cause to patients.

This is the most fucked up and immediately harmful policy decision I think I've ever seen in adult trans healthcare in the UK, and that's saying something. The Welsh Gender Service is one of the best in the country. It is widely praised by the patients it helps. That is why it is being targeted.

What do people get instead? Minimal communication, little to no transparency at this (admittedly early) stage, and a list of non-NHS helplines.

Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
- trying to measure the harm done to patients, wider communities and the NHS - looking how they communicated the issues and how they will communicate going forward - taking steps to try and minimise ongoing harm to people who are directly affected

If the NHS was committed to safety culture, they would be: - investigating into how and why the decision to cancel surgeries was made - investivating why early monitoring and warning systems didn't identify and understand any concerns at an early stage
110
Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Once again struck about the Welsh Gender Service surgery cancellations by how for one of the largest safety-critical systems in the country, the NHS has so little (systems) safety culture. Mass cancelling surgeries, elective or otherwise, at no notice should so clearly be a critical incident.

Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Yes and there are dozens and dozens of non-clinical factors that could plausibly if not likely explain these differences (age profile, wait times, socioeconomic factors, transport and so on) and no evidence any of them have been considered
110
Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
Like there has to be a difference between referral rate and progression rate surely? I still think its probably pretty likely to be explained by something reasonable and easily findable if they cared to look.
110
Vic Stamp @vickerystamp.bsky.social · 28/08/2026
I'm not entirely clear but I think the second bullet could refer to the number of people referred to the surgery wait list who ultimately end up getting surgery. Alternatively it also could be the proportion of relevant people who recieve any surgery referral who then go on to have bottom surgery?
