Each day I ask: what does it mean to be free, and to succeed, without breaking our bond with life or our reverence for it?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I find people who are ignorant easier to live with than people who are indifferent. Someone who doesn't know can still discover the truth. What I still can't wrap my head around is how someone can recognize unnecessary suffering and still remain indifferent to it.

When I look at the state of the world, particularly the unnecessary suffering we continue to create, I keep coming back to one question: How can a species capable of reflecting on its own existence continue to live with so little awareness of the impact it has on other lives?

At what point does the convenience stop serving us and start owning us?

I'm not against progress, technology, or modern comforts. They have brought many real benefits. But sometimes I find myself wondering: If the foundation can be secured with a reasonable amount of effort, why does everything built on top of it seem to demand so much of our lives?...

The more I think about it, the stranger modern life seems. When I step back and look at what a human being actually needs, the list isn't very long. Yet most people spend the majority of their lives struggling to maintain things that go far beyond those needs...

Yet nothing about the physical reality changed. Only the language did. Interesting, isn't it? Sometimes a single word can hide an entire story in plain sight.

The names we give to things can shape how we experience them. "Meat" feels very different from "the body of an animal." Most people would hesitate to say they are eating the body of a pig. It feels easier to talk about eating bacon...

It makes me wonder if reactions like this are really about food at all. So what is being defended? Taste? Tradition? Identity? Freedom? Sometimes the strongest resistance appears exactly where a deeply held assumption is being touched.

Think about that for a moment. Physical confinement felt more acceptable than voluntarily changing what appears on his plate. As a vegan of more than 25 years, I've heard reactions like this many times...

I just spoke with someone who told me he'd rather spend some time in jail than stop eating meat for a while...

One thing I've noticed: Most people can clearly see suffering and injustice, especially when someone else is causing it. The difficulty begins when ending it threatens our own convenience.

Sometimes I think the real divide isn't between vegans and non-vegans. It's between people willing to follow a thought to its conclusion... and people who stop when the conclusion becomes inconvenient.

People often ask vegans: "Do you think you're morally superior?" It's a fascinating question. Because it reveals how difficult it can be to believe that someone might change their behavior simply because they think it's the right thing to do.

One of the weirdest things about being vegan is watching people passionately argue that unnecessary suffering is wrong... right before explaining why animals are the exception.

Even if something turns out not to be real, the experience of it can still leave a mark.

You'd meet people from the dream and still remember what they did. Strange isn't it?

Some people were kind here. Some weren't. And some were simply evil.

Imagine for a moment that this life was just a bad nightmare happening right now and one day we'll all wake up from it and meet the real us in a totally different reality. Yeah, just fantasizing. But honestly, I wonder what that would do to relationships.

I've never been satisfied with the idea that suffering is merely an illusion, yet I've also never been satisfied with the idea that cruelty is somehow woven into the deepest nature of reality itself. That's one area where my own inquiry is still very much ongoing.

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
I think that's one of the hardest questions. Not because evil is difficult to define, but because any explanation that explains it away too easily usually feels incomplete...

That would explain why so many human experiences seem to revolve around both separation and the longing to reconnect.

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Interesting way of putting it. Especially the idea that the individual might be less like a separate entity and more like a localized stream of a larger consciousness experiencing reality from a particular point of view...

The cruelty. The unnecessary suffering. The way people are bent, used, numbed, divided, and trained to call it normal.

If all of this came from some higher intelligence... why do so many of us spend our lives feeling that something here is deeply off?

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
A universal consciousness? The mind of God? Maybe. But even that leaves me with another strange question:

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
If everything began as an idea, whose idea were you before you were conceived? Your parents? I doubt your parents had the exact version of you sitting somewhere in their imagination before you existed.

You’ve probably heard many times that everything starts as an idea. Sounds believable enough right? But then I started wondering:

Modern life has made it possible to improve almost every part of a human life individually while the whole quietly falls apart. You can improve income while losing peace. Improve convenience while losing health. Increase connection while feeling more alone.

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
One of the most important questions a human being can ask is: “Does the way I’m living actually produce the kind of life and world I want?”

Imagine for a moment you had been born to different parents, in a different country, under different assumptions... How much of what currently feels like "you" would still remain?

One of the strangest things about being human is realizing that something can stand directly in front of you for years before you truly see it. Which makes me wonder: What is the difference between looking and seeing?

The uncomfortable answer may often be: "The same way we accept many things today."
020
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
Much of this is absorbed long before it is examined. Which means that when we look back at history and ask: "How could they have accepted that?"

What is food? What is success? Who deserves empathy? Who doesn't? What should be celebrated? What should be ignored?

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
What strikes me most is how much of this is handed to us before we're old enough to question it. A child is born into a world already in motion. The child doesn't choose the assumptions. The child inherits them.

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
We don't only adapt to what's right and what's true. We also adapt to absurdity, cruelty, corruption, and lies. We adapt to systems that might horrify us had we encountered them as outsiders.
120
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
At first, that seems like a remarkable strength. We can survive hardship, uncertainty, loss, war, exile, and enormous change. We simply adapt. But the same capacity has a darker side.
120
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
The more I observe the world, the more one pattern stands out: Human beings can adapt to almost anything if enough people around them treat it as normal.
152
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 09/05/2026
But that doesn’t mean people are powerless. It means real change demands something deeper than information. It demands inner coherence. Because life feels very different once your mind, body, actions, and deeper knowing stop pulling against each other.
030
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 09/05/2026
That alone should humble anyone who thinks human beings change simply because they received more information. Knowing is easy. What’s hard is confronting the patterns you’ve built your emotional survival around.

Almost everyone who smoked a cigarette today already knows smoking is dangerous. The warning is literally printed on the pack. Sometimes with photos horrific enough to make you look away. But they still smoke.
120
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 09/05/2026
Awareness alone changes almost nothing. People can know better while continuing to participate in what weakens them. Take smoking... 🧵

Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
At that point, nobody needs to control you. People enforce it on themselves. And on each other. That’s why it doesn’t feel like control. It just feels… normal.
021
Vic Asouzu @vicasouzu.bsky.social · 23/04/2026
Everyone talks about “the matrix” like it’s some machine out there controlling everything. There is no machine. It’s in how you think. What you accept. What you don’t question. Get enough people thinking that way and it starts to feel like a system...

You’re not trapped in the system. It runs on what you don’t question.

It’s easy to feel like a good person when you don’t look too closely at what your life depends on.
