What religion teaches humility save for Buddhism? Norse paganism surely doesn't - I would venture to say it promotes power but Im not sure enough. But perhaps too many used it for humility - the ones with good messages. They said nothing when bigots use it for power.

They're not stupid enough to buy the Downesian median voter theorum. They push it as an excuse to always move right. This is about keeping a left wing option, or even just an anti-corporate one, off the table. Most Democratic support is there purely out of fear of Republicans.

What this speaks to is that they want a foil. Establishment Democrats serve capital - not you. They promise to do things now and then which they have no intention of doing but in order to obscure this they need someone strong to their right to explain why they couldn't deliver.

@samseder.bsky.social usually gets things right, but I just saw him get them very wrong. He claims that Democrats saved Republicans because they are afraid to insult their voter base. If they're gone they have no voter base. Democrats stressed that they need a strong Republican Party.

Then, the war was about slavery for the South. For the North it wasn't. We started with an evil side and a neutral side. Exposure to slavery and soldiers looking for meaning for their struggle made it about slavery to Union veterans. I don't think it fair to suggest the changing of goals midway.
