Maybe the world ends today. Maybe not. Either way, coffee first. Thoughts later.
PHOTO by La Miko. A woman sits alone on a high stool, facing a large café window that overlooks a misty European street. Her back is to the camera, framed by the soft knit of her camel-colored dress and the dark round brim of her hat. Outside, blurred cars drift past and pale historic buildings loom under a pale winter light. A single dome-shaped lamp glows overhead, casting a pool of warmth against the grey chill beyond the glass. Time feels paused—quiet, observant.

Dating to the early fourteenth century during the late Kamakura period (1185–1333), Japan, this sacred image represents Esoteric Buddhism’s (Mikkyō) vision of the Bodhisattva of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel and the Wheel of the Law.
Seated in a pose of contemplative ease (mahārājalīlāsana), this early fourteenth-century wooden sculpture of Nyoirin Kannon—the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the form of Chintamanichakra—inclines its head gently to rest a right hand against its cheek, absorbed in profound meditation over the salvation of all sentient beings. The six-armed deity sits with the right knee raised and the sole of the foot pressed inward, its fluid, asymmetrical posture balancing supreme celestial authority with intimate, earthly accessibility. Luminous patches of gold leaf (haku) cling to the rounded contours of the torso, face, and tall, braided topknot, softening into the dark, burnished patina of the underlying lacquered cypress (hinoki). One right hand holds the wish-fulfilling jewel (nyoi-hōju) at its chest, while upper arms reach out to hold the wheel of the Law (hōrin) and stabilize the body against the earth. Intricate, microscopic geometric lace rendered in cut gold leaf (kirikane) glimmers along the hems of the flowing garments. The sculpture projects an intensely serene sensory atmosphere: the cool, porcelain-like touch of century-aged wood and smoothed lacquer, the faint, lingering scent of incense embedded in cypress grain, the soft glow of gilded surfaces in low light, and the profound, unbroken silence radiating from downcast, crystal-inlaid eyes.

The creation of such an icon exemplifies the supreme summit of Japanese Buddhist sculpture (busshi) and the spirit of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and sacred craft). Influenced by the realistic innovations of the Kamakura-period Kei school, the statue employs the joined-block wood technique (yosegi-zukuri), which allowed sculptors to hollow out the interior to prevent warping and insert realistic crystal eyes (gyokugan) from within the head.

Traditional Okinawa dance. The kimonos here are very different than in the main Japanese islands to the north. This performance captures the distinct cultural lineage of Ryūkyū Buyō (classical Okinawan dance), a courtly art form nurtured under the sovereign Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th thru 19th c
Poised in deliberate, fluid motion upon a sun-dappled courtyard path, a classical Ryukyuan dancer performs Yotsudake, her body draped in a radiant, golden-yellow bingata robe patterned with cascading tropical flora, waves, and cloud scrolls. She wears the iconic hanagasa—a monumental, flower-shaped headpiece constructed with overlapping crimson petals rimmed in brilliant cobalt blue wave motifs, echoing the bloom of a hibiscus or lotus floating over the sea. Unbound by the heavy, constricting obi sashes of mainland Honshu, her kimono flows with uninhibited maritime freedom, its wide sleeves lined in shocking scarlet silk that flashes with every turn of her wrists. In her hands, she clicks small, tassel-adorned bamboo castanets (yotsudake), anchoring her graceful steps in a precise, hypnotic rhythm. The scene radiates a vivid sensory atmosphere: the sharp, metallic-like clack-clack of polished bamboo echoing through warm coastal air, the gentle rustle of starch-finished silk and ramie fibers, the faint, salty tang of a Pacific breeze mingling with garden fragrance, and the dazzling intensity of southern sunlight illuminating saturated, pigment-dyed textile motifs.
ormed at the crossroads of East Asian maritime trade routes, Ryukyuan court culture synthesized artistic influences from China, Japan, and Southeast Asia to forge a unique aesthetic identity. The dance Yotsudake was historically showcased during grand state banquets (ukawansen) held at Shuri Castle to entertain visiting Chinese imperial envoys (sapposhi). The dancer’s brilliant yellow robe showcases bingata, Okinawa's premier stencil-dyeing technique where mineral pigments and plant dyes are applied over rice-paste resists; during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, rich yellow grounds were strictly reserved for the royal family and high nobility.

The number of Amazon reviews a book has is not the true measure of a book's success. Neither is the number of celebrities talking publicly about a book. Awards are not a true measure of a book’s success. How people feel after writing the book or reading it is the true measure of a book's success.

The sun kisses one ocean goodbye, and another hello. Every end is a beginning somewhere.
Photo by Travis Rupert. The sun hovers just above the horizon, casting molten gold across the surface of gently rolling waves. The sea breathes in slow pulses, washing over the shore with a shimmer that stretches toward the camera like a path of light. Sky and water melt into each other, shifting from deep blue to soft amber, as if the world is holding its breath at the edge of day.
