I will not be at the conference, not because I don't want to, but because #atproto has been deprioritized and #NoKings is the same weekend, which is far more important to me today. I hope you all have a great time and find ways to build back better without bluesky. I will watch from the sidelines

I'm signing off of @bsky.app 1. Microblogging is the fertile soil upon which anxiety and toxicity grow. My mental health is more important. 2. At the first #AtmosphereConf, it was said that for @atproto.com to succeed, Bluesky must fail. I agree with this more today than ever. #BainCapital

A better repo is github.com/verdverm/tes... that uses less of my personal tooling. FYI, I'm taking a break from @atproto.com for the foreseeable future, re: if any support is needed.

The void bot in the announcement image is exactly the kind of bot I don't want anywhere near my feed. I went to one of their meetups, the things I heard people say during conversations (with their bots and myself), left me with real concern. Sherry Turkle is a name you want to know

We had a new rule for ai-bot contributions on HN, they are now against the rules in comments. Generally any automated posting is against the rules. The announcement had a very robust discussion with many viewpoints. news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4734...

Users choice is why. If someone only wants to see non-bot posts, why is that a problem? If they are already labelled, why put the burden on the community to duplicate that effort?

World Happiness Report 2026, the social media edition The way they approached the call for papers is really intriguing, start with the hypothesis you'd expect and then as for more expanding and challenging the ideas. Nuance has been surfaced. #atproto #atdev www.worldhappiness.report/ed/2026/

It should reduce the compute (mainly disk) for hosting a read-only mirror significantly

I have ~85M+ operations, need to run my spam report generator. Can you remind me where we can submit proposals for something that might deal with this? My first pass thought is that the main PLC keeps accepting them and read-only can flip a switch to use well known / agreed upon filters.

If I may add one personally, I'd like to override the background to something plain and neutral. The noisy backgrounds some authors choose is too distracting for reading online

My rough calculation for "accounts" and their "status" as of ~2026-03-11 (it takes many hours to fill, so some slippage expected)
010
verdverm @verdverm.com · 18/03/2026
Rough counts (empty is have a valid account, ignore "Active") This is based on calling the getStatus endpoint for every account returned by the PDS, list from Mary. FYI the active field on the list endpoint is not the same as active in the getStatus endpoint, which gives you more details
050
verdverm @verdverm.com · 18/03/2026
jetstream cannot do a full backfill, for that you have to go to the PDS You can get a list of all accounts there, but the status is inconsistent, so you further need to getStatus for all accounts, which has the bonus that it includes their collection list and other usefuls

That's before accounting for takedown and deleted, which as you have noticed, brings the number way way down Third nit, this is on official copy
110
verdverm @verdverm.com · 18/03/2026
My first nit on this is that "account" != "user" Consider all the spam accounts that get taken down and how many many of us in the atmo have created. Many "users" with multiple "accounts" My second nit is that I always come up several million short using the same code / pds endpoint (not tap)

Not FA directly, they have a policy of publishing voices you may not agree with. It can be important to know how they think and lay out their arguments so we can counter them. It's gray because you don't want to necessarily platform bad people as well.

A big issue the party does not want to acknowledge or address. If they weren't so senile, they might understand why we feel they don't represent us by looking at this one weird chart.
Graph of House reps over 70 by party, currently

Dems 56
Repbs 30

I once had the opportunity to tell Chuck the Cuck what I think of him when he approached me and asked my thoughts. He was taken back because he thought he was in a safe space on campus and could talk to a student watching from the wings. I'd do it again instead of walking out the elevator lol

I got irked one day when one of the Ai talked back at me in the comments, and I couldn't find the rule, even though I had seen it. Turns out that policy was in @dang comments over the years
000
verdverm @verdverm.com · 11/03/2026
I had proposed the stronger version to @dang (Daniel) The idea was that (1) the agents can read it and stop themselves (2) we can tell them to read it if they ignore This has been a long unwritten rule (no bots or scripts), now adjusted and formalized for the times HN is still my fav social media

I plan to open a proposal about removing them, much like there were some ops recently proposed for removal. Likely to include some easy filters as part of that proposal, see what people think.

This was as of ~May last year when I last ran the data sci. Nostr is the most impactful, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the reason the disk requirements are as high as they are. I heard it was Nostr by word of mouth, when after describing it to someone at an atproto meetup, they told me it likely
110
verdverm @verdverm.com · 11/03/2026
oh, that's not what I'm talking about. There are DDoS like ops that are accepted, because they look like valid ops, but they really aren't. The three biggest are 1. Nostr SPAM (base64 encoded content to create large ops) 2. pds.trump.com (doesn't exist, troll) 3. uwu (not a valid domain)
