In the future the cattails will explode without me. I pray they will not go unseen. Who will ride the cemetery horses? Incorrigible blond forelocks blowing in their eyes. Back when I walked through cemeteries commenting on the strange names. The present tense: to take a loveless path is to court a purple-blue emptiness, like a disco or a grotto. Or the cave where dead bodies are stored in the winter, when a shovel can't break through frozen ground.
I have seen such spaces. I have been alone in them. Sound of water lapping. Animals calling to each other. Echo of my own breath. Smoke pouring from my mouth in the cold. Memory, interloper in the corner who means to kill, heavy rock in its hand. And poetry. This poem right now. This one-night stand.

Having been on the other side when Sharon Mazer introduced academia to the doggie doggie world of professional wrestling (1990), I appreciate the broad scope of settings and topics in this volume. You're only as good as whomever you're working with, and there's a lot to work with here.' Thanks.
I was lucky. I started training with Johnny Rodz in October 1987, pre-Gleason's Gym, before the doggie doggie days, when the ring was at the Galaxy Gym in East New York, Brooklyn. It was the tail end of the territory era, when the pro-wrestling business went from more than 20 full-time promotions to just two. I was lucky because there were still a lot of wrestlers from the territory days still wrestling, and I got to share rings and locker rooms with many of them. What I hope to do here is to share a perspective from a world of professional wrestling that now exists mostly in memories or YouTube shoot videos, as 'professional wrestlers' and 'professional wrestling' gives way to WWE Superstars' and 'Sports Entertainment' (Gagnon 2019).
Benjamin Litherland et al. (this volume) point to the British independent wrestling scene to make the case that alternatives to the WWE exist. I'd like to do something similar here by pointing to the past.
1 Curt Hennig often put over whomever he was working with at the beginning of the match, whether it was enhancement talent (YouTube: https:/bit.ly/2WFMztw) or an established star (YouTube: https://bit.ly/2LAE5h6). Jake Roberts comes to mind, too. Both great workers.
