You are more right than you realize. Nearly a quarter of new doctors in the US come from abroad as well nowadays.

Every once in awhile I wonder, is it possible execs don't really know what they're doing? Couldn't be

@scanpipedreams.bsky.social and @blackcat716.bsky.social what does it tell you if you're both right. Blame is so convenient. You can always be right, and at the same time useless

I suppose if we had runaway inflation, it would finally cure the long-running trend of housing consuming increasingly more than the recommended 3rd of household budgets 😁

Lol yeah I had a coffee mug at my most recent interview, and they presumably didn't object---but it was a video call. I wouldn't bring my own drink to an in-person event *unless* it was an all-day type interview.

This is one of the more curious responses I've gotten from someone after I chimed in to agree with them. If I'm wrong then you're, uh, wait...

Centrists, we can only hope, will take note of your high principles

If a person won't tell you what you want, it doesn't mean the person is being evasive. I have made exactly the point I want to make. If you want it made in more concrete detail, among many other things I could observe that if you don't know of any non-sellout centrists, you don't follow primaries.

Ok well, whether you don't know about orange sherbert (dessert that isn't chocolate) or mole (chocolate that isn't dessert) you clamoring for examples is reasonable only inasmuch as a child who knows very little about food reasonably is astonished to be told that chocolate doesn't equal dessert.

The discussion switched to what an equals sign means and which kind of counterexamples count in the post this fine scholar made here: bsky.app/profile/whis...

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Sure, but whether you only want counterexamples of sellouts who aren't centrists, or centrists who aren't sellouts, I have asserted that both exist. If both exist, then whichever one you want also exists.

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
What's amazing here is that you are both wrong about an equal sign, AND even if you were right I mentioned both A that isn't B and B that isn't A so it's extra bizarre that you're anchoring on this.

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Lol are you upset that I *wasn't* sloppy about what an equals sign means

Small child: "Chocolate *is* dessert!!!" Grownup: "Little guy you might think that, but there are desserts that aren't chocolate, and even chocolate dishes that aren't dessert." Small child: "No way! Like what?"

I think about this every time someone yammers that trans girls shouldn't play with other girls. So much of the angst is premised on these ridiculously high stakes youth sports entail.

We've seen that if you blithely ignore how the Constitution works, it won't hold you back. Can the same trick work on the laws of economics?

Production cost for a factory to make, and cost for a consumer to buy, are two distinct things. It's possible for the former to lower while the latter rises.

The best way to make sure the war ends after the midterms is to vote out the losers who started this war, in the midterms.

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Kinda fun to think the public attention span is so short we'd forget about an unconstitutional war so long as it wasn't ~actively~ raging but, if it is, adversaries can use that to their advantage just as well as our own leaders...

This "regulation" you speak of, does it require taking back the Court, executive, and/or either legislative house?
000
ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
We're overdue by a generation in dealing with this one. The idea that one can have critical thinking without knowing facts has been persistently popular since the days of the "information superhighway", perhaps because folks who know very little don't know how bad their critical thinking skills are.

Pedagogy is not some new, unsolved problem awaiting its Silicon Valley disruptor. If you want good teaching in any given subject, it’s there to be had. If you just don’t want to pay for it, then all we’re really talking about is how much you want something for nothing. That’s nothing new, either.

Fwiw, socialism has a lot of potential for strong sense of identity. People taking care of each other, and feeling like their tribe has their back in tough times, that builds in-group identity.

I don't think OP introduces the idea of "intrinsic" appeal. He makes a generalization, but as NME points out, that generalization might well be explained by the fact that all countries experience some degree of threat. It's a rough world out there.

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I think we agree, except instead of calling external threats a confounding variable I would call it (if you want to use that language) another important explanatory variable

ventifact.bsky.social @ventifact.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Even if you're right about the effect of external threats, it's worth asking, is that anomalous? It's a rough world out there

A very niche instance of horseshoe theory: only the very best DC charlatans, like Vance who relies utterly on his Ivy legal training to make a dignified case for awful behavior, can hang with the guy who was elected because of public discontent over DC charlatans.
