I gave a talk on Interpretability tools for Scientific ML at the wonderful Astro/AI workshop organized by @astroai.bsky.social. Who doesn't love a flowchart? But I promise the full picture, while still very incomplete, has a bit more nuance, so find my slides here if you'd like! shorturl.at/hfzFg
A slide with a flow chart with different machine learning interpretability tools.

Start: "Do you care about interpretability?"

    If no → "Goodbye!"

If yes → "What do you care about?"

Communicate with folks in other fields → Strive for interpretable models

Learn new physics → Reduce number and correlation of features as needed

            Flat data → "Equation discovery"

Time series → "Causal structure learning"

Generate insights for people in your field → Communicate with folks in other fields

            "Many features?"

If yes → Use feature importance or (better) info imbalance to reduce dimensions

If no → "Highly correlated features?"

If yes → Use feature clustering or domain knowledge to reduce correlations → "Did it work?"

If no → Use model-specific SHAP or advanced SHAP; LOFI for feature importance but beware of non-unique ranking

If yes → Use SHAP tools safely, PFI for feature importance

If no → Use SHAP tools safely, PFI for feature importance
