From a French POV that sounds really weird because the peak here is definitely in winter (~90 GW in winter at 19h, and just 60 GW at the worst of the last heatwave this summer). And no PV at 19h in winter... So it's actually a big problem.

I would have advised you to come to France, but I'm not quite sure about 2027 either 😬

I was at the Paris rally. I went out of there a bit depressed: no one was really talking of getting out of fossil fuels dependance. A lot of talk about oil companies' profits, but more in a "gasoline is too expensive because of Total" kind of way. Not in a "let's stop burning oil" kind of way.

Nice to see the acceleration, but Germany is still a laggard compared to China, or even to France.

Can we please stop using Bosco Verticale as an illustration for green cities? It's a concrete building, and the trees make it even more polluting because it requires more concrete and rebar. Use wood construction!

This is a disaster for biodiversity. Stray cats are a big factor of extinction of wild birds.

I'm not denying that, but these videos in particular are AI. I think I saw some of them on AI debunking sites. As a general rule, consider that any video that wasn't provided by a reliable source (for example a documentary for a TV channel like the BBC) is suspicious.

By the way, this is actually happening in Paris. Classical economists say it's because of rent caps, I'm not saying they are right, but it seems like the reasoning makes sense. What do you respond to that?
110
velyvan.bsky.social @velyvan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
for example, in France, some people will choose Lille over Paris because the rents in Lille are cheaper, which decreases the number for candidates for parisian flats. If all flats are the same price, don't we risk having 50 people within 2 hours on every Parisian flat ad?
100
velyvan.bsky.social @velyvan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
ok, but given the attractivity of territories is very different, if we don't let rent price vary from a place to another, don't we risk having much more demand in job-rich places, and deserted flats in places with less jobs?

moving out once they get an affordable flat, meaning for example a couple whose children grew up will stay in a 4 bedroom flat for 40 years. So there could be a risk of paralysis. I'm genuinely interested: how can these risks be tackled?

paid). Which means, rent control saved money for a renter who is already rich... Also, it can lead to situations where only people with contacts (generally family) take advantage of the cheap flats, while it becomes litterally impossible for newcomers to find a flat. It also discourages people from

Very interesting! The only thing that worries me about rent control is the risk that the queue of renters gets extremely long. If 50 people are interested in a flat (because the rent is capped), then the landlord could only choose the richest of these 50 (because he wants to be sure the rent will be

Sure! But not autonomous EVs. I think this will lead to a greater difficulty to get rid of cars in city centers, on the long term. It will also compete with public transit, which will eventually lead to suppressing bus routes. Then people will be forced to use the autonomous EVs...
110
velyvan.bsky.social @velyvan.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Autonomous vehicles are a disaster. They will make it much more difficult to reduce the space dedicated to cars in cities. And they will encourage sprawl, since people won't mind spending an hour in the car watching series. We don't need better cars, we need fewer cars.

For aviation, I think biofuels might be an acceptable solution. If we redirect all biofuels currently dedicated to cars (because with EVs we won't need that anymore), we have enough to power all airplanes currently flying.

Why would Lula run the economy to the ground? Giving people housing and education is a good recipe to allow them to participate better in a growing economy

I think the fact that's it's only free busses and not subway is actually clever: people who really don't have enough money will take only busses and benefit from the free part, but a lot of people will keep their public transit subscriptions, and continue to fund the system. It seems viable.

Nice! But there is a difference between getting an e bike and riding it every day. Who wouldn't want an e bike for 250$? But then you could use it for leisure on weekends. You'll use it for commuting for years only if the itinerary is safe, thanks to infra (bike lanes, etc)

Would be good news, if it was a credible plan. But given the rate of adoption of EVs and heat pumps in Germany, I highly doubt it.

010
velyvan.bsky.social @velyvan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

010
velyvan.bsky.social @velyvan.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

There is still progress, but the neighboorhood where I work (between Arc de Triomphe and Opera) is still a nightmare of SUVs, cobblestone painted bike lanes, and parking everywhere. Right wing districts, obviously.
