In the most recent episode of Between 2 Cairns, reviewing B5 - Horror on the Hill, our hosts were befuddled over the conclusion that discussed "subduing the dragon." Dragon subduing is one of the bizarre quirks of White Box OD&D that has been lost to time. A small 🧵of explanation:

Velocitree @velocitree.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
The correct answer is that subduing dragons is fucking awesome, that’s why only dragons. But a cool DM could easily include all other monsters, and this would become a kickass mechanic. Monster capturing! Lastly, I can’t believe this piece of my childhood head cannon fell out of common knowledge.

They think the framework is full of mysteries bc they don’t have all the connections and it’s anti canon. Truth is it’s all holes and loose ideas: I make the needed connections up as rewards, sometimes at the table, and I don’t always remember what I said before.

Oh god me too. With my current weekly group, I settled on a combo of memory catching oddities they personally latched onto (their mental framework) and my repetition of connecting clues. Bit like a 3+ clue rule: they earn oblique clues every time they inch closer to a mystery through exploration.

If there’s a place for fun Lore, it’s weird elements. Objects and monuments and customs that hint at a bigger world and a deep history to uncover.

Velocitree @velocitree.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I also don’t do pantheons or magic systems anymore. Gods godlings and spirits and magic have to be mysterious to be interesting. So anti-canon lore is fine: “Rules change in the Reaches”.
110
Velocitree @velocitree.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I used to write tons of Lore and try to work it in. But now I keep it to <2 pages. It informs who and what the evils of the works are doing, rumored world events. The players encounter it as their actions hit against it. For the world to feel real, lore can’t smack them in the face. It’s friction.

Great insight, wow this IS a parable. Really about many things: GM burnout, frustrated novel writing, being flexible. I find shared storytelling a selfless act, one where finding satisfaction from doing it the right way is key for long term persistence as a GM.

I tend to do the latter (with a very loose short superstory) so my interpretation was coming from there. I hold character choices > story > oracles (eg character lucky high roll). An attack is an action/choice and primacy goes to choices. A roll is an oracle: story over oracle, when there is need.

Velocitree @velocitree.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Hey W I had to think a bit before replying. I agree IF the DM was aiming towards a fixed outcome all along. But if instead they were riffing all along, folding novel events into the superstory, and only got rigid at the end? Then it just sucks and is only a case of freezing up at a key moment.

Thank you! I went to bed trying to decide if I wanted to blog rpg stuff or a poem, then woke up and decided fun prose was the order of the morning. Besides I feel faith does that sometimes for people—just shakes everything and demands to be listened to, reason be damned.

I don’t like it when they say gods are faith constructs, because often that is lazy storytelling. If you take that through to its logical conclusion though, I think it gets interesting again. Example: dreamshrike.blogspot.com/2026/08/ever...

Also very true. Single point failures are not good design. But fudging, like jaywalking, is only a sin if you get caught or do it all the time. Why place a loyalty to facts over the story resolution? This DM who doesn’t do it anymore, do you think they are happy their Blorb card is still valid?

This is why HP should not be blorb (fixed) if the story needs it. Why ruin your game over verisimilitude no one can see? Just double his HP im the moment and keep talking. The archer still lowered him by half, woop.
