If you can't listen to the entire thing/read the book, at least skip to the part about inventing the students grade system: 99percentinvisible.org/episode/673-...

The Blameless Voters
Off the bat, sort of pointless to disagree over and over, with zero chance for changed minds on this matter. I guess it’s not a good use of either of our times.

Ultimately me and Tim probably agree that voters do bear responsibility. And to which degree is up for debate. And that voters are not acting in a vacuum. I always have conceded that the media is and has been involved in the last 26 years of electoral politics. But, really basically a candidate who wins did so because enough people chose to not participate or choose Them over the alternative.

To unpack further:
Elections aggregate millions of individual decisions. The outcomes reflect preferences, tradeoffs, apathy, misinformation, turnout, etc.

And the:
Parties decide who gets funding, ballot access, endorsements, etc
Primary voters who are small, highly motivated subset
Interest groups, donors, dark money
Electoral rules, voting access and gerrymandering, the EC, even ballot design
Media ecosystem (Tim’s chief villain every election) is so broken and distorts reality

All ^^ shape outcomes, period. But we’re just not going to change Citizens United in the midterms.

If the issue is X, then X deserves primary blame. (You can’t just blame a single thing, as the sole cause) But blaming polarization, or blaming institutional weakness, or blaming corruption in general just… does nothing. Okay so “gatekeepers incompetence” is the blame, issue X; how does that affect decision making of Greg in Scranton in November? But it was his choice! Right? We don’t disagree on that objective fact! And outcomes flowed from millions of people making actual decisions, not from being a passive victim to The institutional forces.

To me, what is so frustrating is that those voters in November somehow are defended by Tim saying they could not know, or see, or care enough to make a decision because of Media. And those voters are blameless?

repping Chuck Schumer (wp) in 2026 is a brutal look! but you keep at it. I'm confident I'll see you defending the polls in November, right?
