Those arguing for mass-adoption of AI art always seem intent on proving the wrong thing; that AI tech will change beyond all recognition. They seem less inclined to prove their argument's much wilder claim; that human nature, and all previous modes of taste, emotion and investment, will change too.

It's too depressing and obnoxious to write about, but virtually all of the doomy/horny AI hyperventilating is transparently displaced anxiety about our fucked climate and political situation. Even rich idiots know it's bad and being permitted to get worse. They're trying to write their own ending.

Among other things, this post does a great job of disentangling the classic notion of "AI" — how can we use computers to solve problems in smarter and more efficient ways? — from what LLMs are, and do

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

Well, dang. I liked S1 and I'm really liking S2 so far (a few eps in). Here's hoping I'm stupid enough to enjoy whatever is actually going on (or that it's different than the books)

I stepped away from my computer for a moment. When I returned, it was building something. I did not ask it to do this. We're not ready for what's coming

My passion doesn't lie in coding but I find a real thrill in working out a solution to an interesting problem, even (especially?) when I could just look up how it's already been solved. I reject the idea of that work being superfluous, not because it's Good For You (tho it is) but because it's fun

Patrick @vectorpark.com · 10/09/2026
And even looking up an existing solution and implementing it yourself is a form of discovery, and can be immensely satisfying

And when you're in the habit of Solving the Damn Thing Yourself, you create new problems for which no answer is readily available, and then try to solve them. When you succeed, you've expanded the possibility space, and (maybe) done something new. When you fail, you've had a little adventure

In both writing and drawing, the struggle of capturing an idea on paper (or screen, or whatever) and how that struggle *changes* the idea is the art. Ideas are easy, the final work is an artefact. The struggle is the art.

My theory of why AI sandwiches look particularly horrible: our animal brains are trained to notice if something looks "off" with food (especially meat) and since AI can't get it quite right these images trigger something deeply alarming

Unless we're just talking AAA: there are far more games than movies or TV shows. Even though most are bad, there is still a surplus of "good" games, most of which are either ignored or never discovered. If you took away the 10 "best" games of the year you could find 10 more that are just as good.

This is great. Aside from the externalities/ethical issues of AI, we're only just starting to find out what it does to brains and it doesn't look good

there's a pretty simple connection here 1. humans become good at what they practice doing 2. outsourcing to an AI or even other people, means you have stopped doing the thing 3. if you stop doing the thing, you will stop improving, and, long term, get worse at it (cont.)

Don't like my chances but is there like a good meaty history of 3D modelling production processes anyone knows about? Something like 'here's how they did it in Battlezone and then here's how they did it in Mario 64 and here's how you do it on a 2026 triple-a game'.

There are a lot of reasons (political, environmental, ethical) to oppose generative AI, but for me they're all secondary to the fact that it is absolutely soul-deadening to take in. It's like art with a minus sign in front of it.
