Thinking this morning about our “avoiding the political” detour. Partisan actors can make anything—truth itself—“political” at a moment’s notice. Freedom demands that such moves not constrain intellectual inquiry. “Neutrality” is not achievable. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Paragraph of text: “ seen this way an unrelenting commitment to neutrality itself is a political position and not inherently a virtuous one (as we discussed in detour two). For instance, a commitment to political neutrality might require scholars not to weigh in on any issue that is considered contentious in a community let alone around which a state, candidate, movement, or political party is seeking to enact a policy. Trying to remain apolitical would force a researcher working in such an area to abandon their research topic or a teacher to abandon academic freedom for fear of “taking a side.“ Moreover, since politicians can engage educational issues at any time, such as testing programs, school funding, curricular perspectives on history, mandatory use of educational technologies, the presence or absence of police in schools, and so on, any topic may “become political” without notice. Indeed the ideal of basic accuracy in statements of fact has become a matter of partisan wrangling.
